Thom Jones, who does not sing "What's New, Pussycat?" lives in the Adirondacks with his wife and their three kids--the long-haired, electric guitar playing teenage son, the fuzzy-haired ninja-spiderman in training pre-teen son, and the little daughter who is convinced that she is an indestructible monkey. He started writing the Guardians of Elestra stories for his kids in 2004, and he finally decided that Tobungus the mushroom man had to move beyond his family to a wider audience. When he's not writing, he is either homeschooling his kids or running crime scene camps for kids somewhere in the Northeast. He started Peekaboo Pepper Books as a way to entertain and educate kids. His stories are filled with unique fantasy elements, challenging vocabulary, humor, and mysteries that weave their way through all of the books in the Guardians of Elestra series. His website, www.guardiansofelestra.com has more information about Elestra, including snippets from books in the library, prophecies, menus from Glabber's Grub Hut, and contests which allow readers to submit stories and artwork which may be displayed on the website and in a printed book. A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME

I picked up this new e book version of the classic Victorian tale on a whim. What I did not expect was a totally new perspective on this classic fantasy tale.

As a child I read the book, but did not much care for it. After doing a bit of research I discovered that Carroll (real name Charles Dodgson) told this story to a friend and his three young children while enjoying a boat ride. The children were so pleased with it that he decided to write it down and commission John Tenniel to do the drawings for the publication. Dodgson was a mathematician intrigued by the math and science that was being applied daily to inventions as England was entering the Industrial Revolution. His other interests included reading, poetry and photography.

Alice was modeled on one of these three girls. She is curious and polite. The character in the story displays fear and courage, resilience, and the ability to adapt to change. The anthropomorphic characters she encounters are a strange bunch; some of them like the Cheshire Cat and the Caterpillar appear to teach her, while others like the Mock Turtle and the Flamingo appear sillier and more frivolous. A careful reading will produce numerous evidences of mathematical reasoning and the importance that the author attaches to mathematics in the world around us; yet the reader’s main focus centers on the trials and tribulations that Alice must face from the time she falls into the rabbit hole: how she must swim herself across the sea of tears to face the challenges that many creatures present, to her ultimate escape from the nefarious Queen of Hearts at the trial, which almost results in her losing her head! Alice learns to think on her feet quickly in this coming of age tale.

Adult readers will reminisce and recall many of the famous quotations, like “Off with his head,” and “Curious and curiouser.” Tenniel’s woodcut engraved illustrations are etched in time and delight the eye, whether in black and white or in color. The beautiful scroll work that edge the pages are a reminder of the care taken with printing books long ago. Alice is a strong, intelligent character who maintains the proper balance between respect and independence; she is probably one of the first strong female models in modern literature. This book can be used as wonderful tale for family discussion on so many levels. I would recommend it for tweens and teens as well.

Nicely illustrated tho not my favorite version

Classic artwork and storyline with same interesting border on each page, but lacking the wonderful images at the end of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Peter Newell etal ASIN: B005LDC7IY that makes this Fairy eBooks version only my second favorite. Still a very good book tho. One of several Fairy ebooks I've had the pleasure to read including "The Swineherd" and "Blue Beard" among others.

Romantic novel on Anne Neville and her husband King Richard III

This book about Anne Neville, younger daughter of the Earl of Warwick the Kingmaker, and her husband Richard Plantagenet Duke of Gloucester, later King Richard III, is also available in print edition under the title “Desire the Kingdom”.

The book starts in 1470 when Anne and her family are forced to flee into exile in France following her father’s second unsuccessful rebellion against King Edward IV. Even though she is in love with the king’s younger brother Richard, who returns her affection, Anne is married to Prince Edward of Lancaster to seal her fathers’ switch of allegiance from the House of York to the Lancastrian faction. She is then orphaned and widowed at the battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury and after a fierce opposition to her marriage to Richard on the part of George of Clarence (who smuggles her into a cookshop disguised as a kitchen maid to keep her away from her brother) she is eventually rescued by Richard with whom she will share the resto of her unfortunately brief and ultimately dramatic life.

The story is mainly told through Anne’s point of view even if Richard’s stance is also taken into consideration. The plot is mainly based on Paul Murray Kendall’s biography of Richard III with some original intuitions in the tale (e.g. Anne’s suicidal thoughts after her kidnapping in the cookshop) that could have been further developed had the premature death of the author not prevented a revision of the first draught.

The book therefore falls short of a potentially better result and does not reach the poignancy of other novels on Anne Neville like “The White Queen of Middleham”, “My Lords Richard” or the most recent “Virgin widow”, but it is a pleasant read that you might like to add to your Ricardian collection if you have already read other unmissable works like “The Sunne in Splendour” by Sharon Kay Penman or Rhoda Edwards’ “Some touch of Pity” and “Fortune’s Wheel”. Rating would have been 3 stars, but I added one star in memory of the prematurely deceased author.

Of all of the books of this genre I did not find this to be a good read. Often found language errors and spelling errors. Aren't there editors anymore? A bit stilted and characterizations seemed a bit flat.

Worthwhile read

Debated whether to rate as 3 or 4 stars, but it was an enjoyable read, so I went with 4. As another reviewer mentioned, there are typos and language errors, with greater frequency in the last few chapters, I thought; more thorough editing would have been helpful. Anne Neville is an interesting historical figure that doesn't get a lot of attention. She was married to heirs on both the Lancaster and York sides, so her life is full of upheaval. I got interested in her from watching The White Queen series. Richard III and Anne in this book are a tad bit one dimensional, written as pretty much always being good. Still, I liked their story as it was written in this novel, and it's sad that things went so badly for them when they did seem to have good intentions. I've enjoyed finding out more about Richard III from other sources in recent years, and it seems more typical now to portray him not as the killer of the Princes in the Tower, but one who was framed for it. The only thing I would have really preferred to be included is more of Anne's younger years, but the author did as great job of covering a lot of material even without that time period.

About the Author
A chance encounter with a merry-go-round horse in--of all places--a highway rest area led to Amanda Harte's incurable case of carousel fever. She's been planning stories about painted ponies and the people who love them ever since and is delighted to share the first of the Hidden Falls Romances with you.

Amanda is a charter member of Romance Writers of America, co-founder of its New Jersey chapter, and an avid traveler. She married her high school sweetheart, who shares her love of travel and who's driven thousands of miles to help her research her books. They've recently fulfilled a long-time dream and are now living in the American West, where they're continuing to search for antique carousels.

Painted Pones is Amanda's eighth romance novl. An editorial cartoonist with a strong interest in politics, Denslow also illustrated his own books including Denslow's Mother Goose (1901), Denslow's Night Before Christmas (1902) and the 18-volume Denslow's Picture Books series (1903-4). The royalties from the print and stage versions of The Wizard of Oz were sufficient to allow Denslow to purchase Bluck's Island in Bermuda, and crown himself King Denslow I. However, he drank his money away, and he died in obscurity, of pneumonia.

Denslow tries again

W.W. Denslow hit it big in collaboration with L. Frank Baum, first with Father Goose: His Book, then with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Baum and Denslow parted company in a dispute over royalties from a stage musical adaptation of the Wizard. In 1904 Denslow decided to try again. He teamed up with writer Paul West in 1904 to craft a children's book and accompanying stage musical. The Pearl and the Pumpkin was the result. It's an enjoyable little book, no classic, but engaging and fun. A quibble: the Pearl is the heroine, Pearl, who plays only a supporting part in the story. Some story elements could have been better developed. Denslow's art is good, but not quite to the inspired level of his work with Baum. Sadly, the limited success of the book and musical signalled an end to Denslow's golden age. He died, nearly penniless, in 1915.
Dover Books has done it's usual fine job in bringing this forgotten pleasure back to life. They have reproduced Denslow's full-color plates in only 2 colors, doubtless for budgetary reasons. However, as Denslow's plates are line drawings colored in, the change looks consistent with the rest of the book. A quick online search will show you how the plates looked originally. In all, a job well done.
