Inside Game of Thrones - Collector's Edition

[[VIDEOID:60ac696323fe19775da9dda8b23a62f8]]As a fan of Game of Thrones, I bought this because I thought it would make a nice gift for myself. One thing to note is that it only covers the first two seasons of the show (there is another volume available that covers seasons 3-4).

The main book, "Inside HBO's Game of Thrones", is relatively unsatisfying although not without its merits. You're feelings on the book will depend on just how "inside" the filmmaking process you were hoping to go. The main focus of this book is on the characters of the show, organized by house - the Starks, the Targaryens, etc. The books discusses casting, creation of the characters family trees/lineage charts, costuming, and a bit of making-of info from the set. My main issue is that the imagery in the book needed to be better -- I wanted more pictures, more concept art, more set photos, etc.

The collector's edition, although a significant expense, is the one to own in my view. You get a second book with storyboards - these are sketches of key sequences that the cast/crew use to visualize the scenes before they are filmed. I find this book for be incredibly interesting to look through, and it will no doubt interest those who are into the process of filmmaking.

You also get two high quality maps. These are not only very nice replicas, but it was helpful to see where the locations are in relation to each other. I wish I had these to consult when I was watching the show, because I'll admit that at certain points the geography of things can get quite confusing.

Overall, it's a very nice set that fans will appreciate.

You're only sixteen once!

Betsy Was a Junior is perhaps the most fun-filled book of the entire Betsy-Tacy series. It opens with Tib's return from Milwaukee, which is met with joy and happiness by Betsy and Tacy. Three strong once again, the girls busy themselves with attending dances, performing in school recitals, and, of course, hanging out with their Crowd.
Prompted by older sister Julia's rhapsodic descriptions of sorority life, Betsy decides to follow suit by creating a high school sorority called Okto Delta. Although the eight members have a terrific time throwing parties and eating delicious refreshments (I defy anyone to read MHL's books without getting up and going the refrigerator just once!), they soon learn that a sorority has its drawbacks. Realizing that she and her sistren are alienating other members of Deep Valley High School (particularly Tony), Betsy dissolves the group and reverts back to her gregarious self.
Tib provides an extra dash of glamour to this book, what with her "blonde, stunning looks" and "lilac-trimmed dresses" that contrast fascinatingly with her practical, independent personality. One suspects that even Irma the Siren felt some competition once Ms. Muller joined the ranks of Deep Valley High School.
This is a wonderful book about friendship and community; if you haven't discovered the magic of the Betsy-Tacy series, do yourself a favor and pick up one of these treasures. You won't be sorry!

A life-long Betsy Tacy fan!!

I would give the entire series more than five stars. My obsession with the Betsy-Tacy books began as a young girl reading my mother's hardcover copies. These had been given to her as gifts by her aunt. My great-aunt then began giving me each book in the series, in hard-cover. Unfortunately, all of these were destroyed in a fire that destroyed our family home. My mother was successful in obtaining all the Betsy-Tacy books in hardcover again. I grew up mere miles from the town on which Deep Valley is based, Mankato, MN. I am grown and married and have children of my own, all boys. But I look forward to sharing the timeless treasure of these books with my niece and friends' daughters. I still reread them regularly. These books transcend the period in which they were written. Give yourself a gift and read this series; then share it with a friend and with all the young women/girls you know. There are also two peripheral Lovelace books not directly part of the Betsy-Tacy series, but placed in Deep Valley: Carney's House Party and Emily of Deep Valley. I believe they may be out-of-print; publisher, please bring them back as you revitalized the Betsy-Tacy books.

This goes for all the "Betsy" books

When Maud Hart Lovelace first wrote the "Betsy-Tacy" seires, did she know how much so many people, from children to adults, would love them? The series has at least one book that anyone of any age can relate to. 10-year-olds will love "Over the big Hill," high-schoolers will love the books about when Betsy was attending Deep Valley High, etc. And it doesn't end there! Even if you're not the age that Betsy was in one of the books, you can still love all of them! Maud has a way of capturing real feelings and expiriences--even bad ones--and turning them into works of art. The "Betsy-Tacy" series really is a work of art, even if it was painted with a pen, not a paint brush.

Penetrating, rich, seminal

In his endorsement of Morrison's book, the great Thomas Howard has, correctly I think, called it literary and dramatic criticism of high excellence. More important, though, are Howard's references to Morrison as teacher and theologian: these cut more closely to the real achievement of To Love Another Person. Richly allusive (though easily so: Morrison's learning and his assimilation of it seem ever-present to his mind), the author's devotional reach and authenticity are utterly engaging -- and very quickly dynamic. The reader's vision -- first of Hugo's book, then of the Musical, thereafter of redemption, and finally of her or his own encounter with redemptive love -- are made anew. It should occur to some publisher simply to publish Hugo's book and Morrison's as a twin set, so intimately are they joined one to the other and eventually to the receptive reader.

John Morrison gives the reader a great great insight into the spitituality woven throughout Victor Hugo Les Miserables. It reveals with joy and clairity the healing nature of God love throught the redemption of Jean Valjean. The characters of the book and musical are explored to reveal the plight of our humanity in the light of Christ.

A fine example of cultural apologetics

Morrison's fine book advances apologetics without beating the arts into a systematic box. His book succeeds in five areas that are vital to a fully integrated cultural apologetics that engages contemporary worldviews in a transforming and redemptive way.

First, Morrison structures his book around a parallel analysis of Victor Hugo's great novel and the acclaimed musical it inspired. By focusing on both versions of Hugo's timeless tale, Morrison builds a bridge between two very different genres (sadly, he makes no reference to any of the excellent French and English film versions), and shows how the central message remains constant while yet being subtly transformed in its journey from page to stage. Living as we do in a multi-media society where sounds and images carry as much (if not more) weight than the written word, we need cultural apologists who can move smoothly from one medium to another. The Bible itself uses dozens of distinct genres to convey its teachings, bearing witness to the fact that God was aware of the need for different learning strategies long before it became a fixture in modern and postmodern schools of education.

Second, he makes it clear that he chose to write on the musical version of Les Miserables because of the profound impact it has had on audiences of all ages, cultures, and religions. He recognizes that, whatever the actual faith of the authors of the novel and musical, the show has imparted grace to millions of people across the world. In post-Christian London, the musical has played non-stop for over 25 years, and it has been translated into 21 different languages, including Estonian, Norwegian, Hebrew, and Japanese. An apologist who wishes to win back the culture for Christ simply cannot ignore a work of art that has so profoundly touched so many people. Our world is hungry for grace and for stories that make that grace real.

Third, all the characters in both versions of Les Miserables are defined, in one way or another, by their relationship to God--whether they love him or hate him, know him or seek to hide from him, use him for their own agenda or let themselves be used by him for the good of their fellow man. Morrison is sensitive to this aspect of the story, and it allows him to explore dimensions of the human person that are often left out of logic-based apologetics books. Why is it that one person can have strong evidence for the existence of God and yet reject him, while another, who has been vouchsafed but the slightest glimpse of his presence, can seek him to the ends of the earth? Why is it that one who knows and respects and upholds the law cannot see past it, while another who has broken the law can perceive a truth that transcends the law?

Fourth, Morrison presents the character arcs of Jean Valjean, Javert, Fantine, Cosette, Marius, and the Thenardiers in terms of a journey. Too often, Christians (especially evangelicals like myself) place all their focus upon the moment of decision, when we accept Christ's sacrifice and take it onto ourselves. By allowing us to journey alongside the characters, Morrison reminds us that our movements toward and away from God exist on a continuum that is dynamic and that often shifts throughout our lives. The surrender to Christ calls for a life-long series of little deaths to our self, our pride, our fears, and our desire for control. Morrison shows us that a meditation on Les Miserables can bring the reality of the Cross before us in a way that is more powerful and lasting than any theological study of the meaning of Calvary.

Fifth, Morrison sets his analysis of Les Miserables within a wider dialogue that includes the voices of C. S. Lewis, G. K. Chesterton, Charles Williams, T. S. Eliot, Augustine, Dante, Donne, George Herbert, Thomas Traherne, Tolstoy, Dickens, and Richard John Neuhaus. Morrison, an Episcopal priest and retired English teacher, quotes these writers, not to impress us with his wide reading, but because he understands that art does not exist in a vacuum.

With the success of the film version of the Les Mis musical, Morrison's book takes on even greater relevance and will challenge and inform lovers of the film.

I admit I was mislead by the description. This article, while well written actually spoke more of the other "special people" than it did on Grady Stiles.

Flawed book

The author is completely clueless and this was NOT a factual story other than Stiles' autobiographical information. Many of his "facts" are incorrect and the rest of the pages are merely the authors OPINIONS about Stiles and his affliction.

This book was very strange, but that's to be expected from a book with the word bizarre in the cover. My only complaint is I think it could have been longer because the author seemed to have a lot of good material that could be expanded upon.
