African-American Poetry: An Anthology, 1773-1927 (Dover Thrift Editions), by Joan R. Sherman

In the 19th century, abolitionist and African-American periodicals printed thousands of poems by black men and women on such topics as bondage and freedom, hatred and discrimination, racial identity and racial solidarity, along with dialect verse that mythologized the Southern past. Early in the 20th century, black poets celebrated race consciousness in propagandistic and protest poetry, while World War I helped engender the outpouring of African-American creativity known as the "Harlem Renaissance."
The present volume spans this wealth of material, ranging from the religious and moral verse of Phillis Wheatley Peters (ca. 1753–1784) to the 20th-century sensibilities of Langston Hughes and Countee Cullen. Also here are works by George Moses Horton, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Alberry Alston Whitman, Henrietta Cordelia Ray, Daniel Webster Davis, Mary Weston Fordham, James Weldon Johnson, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and many more.
Attractive and inexpensive, this carefully chosen collection offers unparalleled insight into the hearts and minds of African-Americans. It will be welcomed by students of the black experience in America and any lover of fine poetry.
Includes 4 selections from the Common Core State Standards Initiative: "I, Too, Sing America," "Lift Every Voice and Sing," "Yet Do I Marvel," and "On Being Brought from Africa to America."

A compact but rewarding sampling
By Michael J. Mazza
"African-American Poetry: An Anthology, 1773-1927," edited by Joan Sherman, is a powerful and rewarding gathering of poems. Sherman has packed a lot into just 82 pages. Many of the giant names of African-American literature are here: Phillis Wheatley, Frances E.W. Harper, James Weldon Johnson, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and many more. There are also poets who are perhaps less well-known, but still admirable as literary creators. As a whole, these poets write with an intriguing variety of voices: solemn, satirical, militant, etc.
Many of black America's most important and most memorable poems are in here: Wheatley's "On Being Brought from Africa to America," Dunbar's "Sympathy" (with its significant line, "I know why the caged bird sings..."), and Countee Cullen's "Yet Do I Marvel." There are poems about slavery, literacy, religion, racial uplift, folk culture, and more. It is interesting to see the juxtaposition (sometimes from the same author) between poems written in vernacular language and those written in very formal English with classical references.
The only weak aspect of the book are the author bios. They are simply too short. Some are only a single sentence long, and they don't contain much bibliographic data. I would have liked a little more for each author. Still, this is an excellent anthology whose compact size and focus make it great both for classroom use and for general reading.

The Underground Railroad from Slavery to Freedom: A Comprehensive History (African American), by Wilbur H. Siebert

First published in 1898, this comprehensive history was the first documented survey of a system that helped fugitive slaves escape from areas in the antebellum South to regions as far north as Canada. Comprising fifty years of research, the text includes interviews and excerpts from diaries, letters, biographies, memoirs, speeches, and a large number of other firsthand accounts. Together, they shed much light on the origins of a system that provided aid to runaway slaves, including the degree of formal organization within the movement, methods of procedure, geographical range, leadership roles, the effectiveness of Canadian settlements, and the attitudes of courts and communities toward former slaves.
In his introduction to Professor Siebert's book, historian Albert Bushnell Hart lauds the author for having "rescued and put on record events which in a few years will have ceased to be in the memory of living men. [Siebert] has done for the history of slavery what the students of ballad and folk-lore have done for literature; he has collected perishing materials."
Invaluable for its unbiased, literate treatment, this carefully researched study will be an excellent resource for instructors and students of African-American history, and engrossing literature for readers interested in the plight of fugitive slaves in the pre-Civil War era.

The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After, by Julia Quinn

Once upon a time, a historical romance author created a family . . .

But not just any family. Eight brothers and sisters, assorted in-laws, sons and daughters, nieces and nephews (not to mention an overweight corgi) plus an irrepressible matriarch who's a match for any of them . . . These are the Bridgertons: less a family than a force of nature. Through eight bestselling novels, readers laughed, cried, and fell in love. But they wanted more.

And so the readers asked the author . . .

What happens next? Does Simon ever read his father's letters? Do Francesca and Michael become parents? Who would win in a Pall Mall grudge match?

Does "The End" really have to be the end?

Now, with The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After, Julia Quinn delivers eight sexy, funny, and heartwarming "2nd Epilogues" plus a bonus story about none other than the wise and witty matriarch Violet Bridgerton herself. So get to know the Bridgertons all over again—because Happily Ever After is a whole lot of fun.

Amazon.com Review
Setting: Regency England

Sensuality: 7

Penelope Featherington fell madly, hopelessly in love with Colin Bridgerton two days before her 16th birthday. Unfortunately, Colin has always seen Penelope as the plump, shy best friend of his younger sister. By the time Penelope is 28 and a seasoned member of the English ton, she's accepted that her love for Colin is destined to remain unrequited and she shall be a spinster forever. Fate, however, has other plans. When Lady Whistledown's Society Papers announce that Colin has returned from his nearly nonstop travels, Penelope is blissfully unaware that her life is about to change dramatically. Colin is equally unaware of the turn his life is about to take. He's not surprised that his beloved mother is determined to marry him off, but he's rather astonished to find himself inexplicably drawn to Penelope. Her dry wit and intelligent mind are delightful, and Colin soon finds himself joining forces with her to deflect his matchmaking mama's good intentions. Together, the two will thwart their mothers' iron wills, face the formidable Lady Danbury, confront the gossips of London society, and resolve the lovely dilemma of falling in love. And, oh yes, there is that matter of the true identity of Lady Whistledown. Will the twosome unmask the elusive journalist? Or will their efforts be doomed to failure like so many others' before?

Romancing Mr. Bridgerton continues author Julia Quinn's wildly popular series of Regency historicals featuring the Bridgerton family, The Duke and I, The Viscount Who Loved Me, and An Offer from a Gentleman. True, the novel possesses all that we've come to expect from Quinn, including deft plotting, witty repartee, a faultless Regency setting, and expert characterization. But perhaps the book's most pleasing facet is Quinn's quietly nuanced handling of the hero's and the heroine's internal growth, which is furthered by their blooming relationship. They're two strong individuals made stronger by their bond. Now that's love. --Lois Faye Dyer

From the Back Cover

Penelope Featherington has secretly adored her best friend's brother for . . . well, it feels like forever. After half a lifetime of watching Colin Bridgerton from afar, she thinks she knows everything about him, until she stumbles across his deepest secret . . . and fears she doesn't know him at all.

Colin Bridgerton is tired of being thought nothing but an empty-headed charmer, tired of everyone's preoccupation with the notorious gossip columnist Lady Whistledown, who can't seem to publish an edition without mentioning him in the first paragraph. But when Colin returns to London from a trop aboard he discovers notyhing in his life is quite the same—especially Penelope Featherington! The girl haunting his dreams. But when he discovers that Penelope has secrets of her own, this elusive bachelor must decide . . . is she his biggest threat—or his promise of a happy ending?

It was great to revisit and 'catch up' with all of the Bridgertons.
By Letitia
Rating: A ... Heat: Sweet

Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, Hyacinth... and, of course, the matriarch of this lovely bunch, Violet. Also known as the Bridgertons. When I first met this group, starting with Daphne in The Duke and I, it was love at first page. That week I devoured the first four books in a row. Then, when I realized there were only eight Bridgertons and thus only eight books in this series, I slowed my pace down. Savored them.

Because Julia Quinn writes fantastic romances and this series is an excellent example of her sweet, fun, and, often, sarcastic style that's infused with so many emotions that she never fails to tug on my heart strings. Simon and his stutter. Anthony and his fear of bees. Sophie and her cruel stepmother. She creates characters you can't help but love.

If you haven't yet met the Bridgertons, I highly recommend you do... and before you read this book, as this is their after the happily ever after. Their second epilogues.

The Duke and I. Takes places twenty years after. Oh, Simon. Always, always loved him--even when he was trying his best to not let anyone, especially Daphne, love him. In Daphne and Simon's second epilogue, we get to see what would cause Simon to actually open the letters from his father. And Simon and Daphne get a huge surprise that surprised me too.

The Viscount Who Loved Me. Takes place fifteen years after. Anthony and Kate make bickering an art form. And, for them, it's also an odd sort of foreplay. Time definitely hasn't changed that. Watching them try to outwit and outmaneuver each other during their annual Pall Mall game was hilarious. Especially when they get a little bit dirty.

An Offer From a Gentleman. Takes place three years after. Benedict and Sophie may have found their Cinderella-esque happy ending, but Sophie's un-wicked stepsister Posy has not. Thankfully for Posy, Sophie is dedicated to finding a love match for her... and I'm glad, because Posy definitely deserves it.

Romancing Mr. Bridgerton. Takes place months later. Colin and Penelope were my favorite unlikely but completely perfect match. Their book also marked the reveal of Lady Whistledown. But one important person in Penelope's life still doesn't know Lady Whistledown's identity. Eloise. And now the only good time to tell her is on Eloise's wedding day. I'm glad these two best friends no longer have any secrets between them.

To Sir Phillip, With Love. Takes place ten years after. Eloise and Sir Phillip's second epilogue is different from the rest because it's told in first person. Told by one their troublesome twins, Amanda. It was wonderful to see her all grown up and to hear about her parents from her point of view.

When He Was Wicked. Takes place three years after. Michael and Francesca had one of the hardest, most emotional beginnings. They had a long journey to their Happily Ever After. And, even though they're happy together now, something is still missing. Someone. Their story made me cry but it was worth the tears.

It's in His Kiss. Takes place twenty two years after. Hyacinth, Hyacinth, Hyacinth. The troublesome and outspoken Bridgerton. Gareth is a lucky man, even if she is often a handful... and has been obsessed with finding the St. Clair family jewels for two decades. Luckily, she gets a little help from their daughter Isabella.

On the Way to the Wedding. Takes place eight years after. Lucy and Gregory are the most prolific breeders of the Bridgerton children, having nine children of their own. But their last, the twins, births were not so easy. Poor Gregory. Poor Lucy. Good thing Hyacinth was there to take care of everything. *wink*

Violet in Bloom. Violet Bridgerton may never have had her own book, but she was an important character in all of the books. Such a wonderful, devoted mother. It was fantastic to see her in different stages of her life... and I loved seeing how she and Edmund met. Even though it made me cry. This was my favorite story by far.

The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After is such a spectacular companion to this series. I wish I had the time to reread each book and follow them with its second epilogue. Still, even though it's been some time since I read the books, it was great to revisit and 'catch up' with all of the Bridgertons. Oh, and I also adored the small forwards before each story from Miz Quinn. I loved reading her thoughts, a few fun little tidbits about each character, their story, and why she decided to write that particular second epilogue.

What a Delight it was to Spend Time with this Family Again!
By Angie Mike
Wow! I'm so surprised by some of the poor reviews for this. I think most is in part due to the buyers having bought and read the 2nd epilogues and then re-purchasing the compilation of them again. I bought the paperback which states on the front cover (CONTAINS PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED MATERIAL). If you have not read the 2nd epilogues before and you love this family, most of you I'm sure will be overjoyed to read this! I laughed, smiled, and even cried a little during the final two stories in this book. It was like catching up with old friends, and I loved every second I spent reading it. Please keep in mind that these are just follow-ups to each of the Bridgerton siblings and their families. This is NOT a novel, and each story is very short in length, about 40-50 or so pages each on average. You get some unanswered questions/problems finally resolved, and Ms. Quinn also included a short novella about their mother Violet which was touching! This was such a joy to read and I truly hope we get to see more of this wonderful family soon. For true Julia Quinn/Bridgerton fans, this is not to be missed! 5 Wonderful Stars*****

The Brigertons: Happily Ever After
By Jean Leatham
I liked the idea of continuing the story of this family. Their stories were so interesting, fun, and well written. Laughs, and amusement, happened with all of them. She (the author) made them human, loving, and a totally loving, and fun family. Thanks it was great reading.

No matter who has to die.

DOWNFALL

The simplest beginnings can unravel a life. For Sam Capra, it is the moment a beautiful young woman walks into his San Francisco bar.

Sam doesn't want trouble. An ex-CIA agent, his only desire now is to build a quiet, peaceful home for himself and his infant son. But Diana Keene is no ordinary customer. She's pursued by two gunmen, and when she finds Sam, she whispers an urgent, desperate plea: "Help me."

And without any warning, Sam is thrust into a fight for his life. For Diana is being hunted by a deadly network-a shadowy alliance of select, influential men and women who use their connections, their authority, and their wealth to bend the world to their will. Now, this network aims its relentless fury against the man interfering with their plans to seize a new level of power: Sam Capra.

Threatened on all sides, Sam has only one hope to survive the network's all-consuming attack and return to his life with his son....he must destroy the man who owns the people who run the world.

Amazon.com Review
Harlan Coben Interviews Jeff Abbott

Harlan Coben was the first ever author to win all three major crime awards in the US. He is now a global bestseller with his mix of powerful stand-alone thrillers and Myron Bolitar crime novels. He has appeared in the bestseller lists of The Times, The New York Times, Le Monde, The Wall Street Journal and The Los Angeles Times.

Jeff Abbott is the internationally bestselling author of eleven novels, including the thrillers Panic, Fear, and Run and the Sam Capra novels. He is a three-time nominee for the Edgar Award and in 2012 won the International Thriller Writers Award for his novel The Last Minute.

Harlan Coben: If you could go for drinks (possibly to one of Sam's bars) with only one of the characters from Downfall, who would it be? And it's not allowed to be Sam.

Jeff Abbott: Oh, then Mila. She's one of those characters that I had no idea how people would respond to her--and they love her. I've had people ask if I'd ever do a book with her in the lead, rather than Sam. And I feel we still have so much to learn about her--I remember a reviewer commenting about finding out about her past in The Last Minute, saying, well, she wasn't a mystery any more. I've only begun to tell readers about Mila. Lots of secrets still there. So maybe she'd tell me more of them as we sipped her favourite Glenfiddich.

Harlan: Sam is a very likeable lead character. Is he based on anyone you know?

Jeff: There is obviously a certain amount of me in Sam; but there's a certain amount of me in the villains, as well. No, I haven't really based him on anyone I know.

Harlan: You're obviously a fan of thriller writing, but how about thriller movies? Do you have a favourite three?

Jeff: I love North by Northwest--such a wonderful blend of character-driven story, humour, and intrigue. The Seven Samurai is not only a brilliant action film, but it's also a beautiful movie. And does The Godfather count as a thriller? I'm on the edge of my seat when I watch it, and I've seen it many times. It's a great example of suspense deriving from the promise of violence.

Harlan: Without giving anything away, there is an element of the Faustian 'deal with the devil' in the plot of Downfall. What is it that particularly interests you about this idea?

Jeff: Often we feel we're always bargaining with fate--that's what life is. But the story of Faust has stayed relevant for centuries because it's a hugely dramatic situation--what would you give up to have everything that you wanted? What price for your own personal paradise? It's always an inevitable tragedy--it's the best representation, in story, of living with the consequences of your bad choices. And that's what I wanted to show in Downfall--the consequences of making this 'deal with the devil.' Because it doesn't just affect the person who makes the deal, it affects everyone in his life, his family, and many innocent people.

Harlan: Downfall is obviously an action-packed thriller, but at its heart there are strong themes around how far one would go to protect or help their family. Was there something in particular that triggered this idea in your mind?

Jeff: You and I have both dealt with this in our books before--but I think this time it was more a question asked by the bad guys than Sam. And it's an interesting reversal. I always want the antagonists in my stories to think they're the heroes of the story--that they are in the right, they are doing what's necessary for their own interests, that Sam is the bad guy. And here, the question is what will a bad guy do to secure his family's future? Here the bad guys will destroy anyone, even a stranger, who gets in their way; while Sam is the person who will risk it all to help a stranger in need. They're total opposites. And I love that balance, when the hero and villain are really the opposite sides of the same coin.

Harlan: What are you working on next?

Jeff: I've just finished Sam Capra #4, which will be out in the summer of 2014 in both the UK and the US.

From Booklist
A middle-aged woman, the CEO of a global PR firm who has just been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, moonlights as a hit woman for a shadowy cabal. Why? Readers won’t find out immediately, but the world Abbott creates is filled with cabals: wealthy, influential people ceaselessly trying to tilt every playing field, whether financial or political, to their advantage. Former CIA agent Sam Capra (The Last Minute, 2012) is now employed by the Round Table, an equally shadowy group of the wealthy and powerful people who have banded together to thwart such evildoers. Sam becomes the tip of the Round Table’s spear, but even he doesn’t understand the big picture, even as he dashes from one dangerous clash to the next. Eventually, Abbott fills everyone in on the Faustian machinations of a world-class bad guy named Belias. Downfall features many engaging, conflicted characters; plenty of betrayal; and enough unrelenting action, unfurled at a breakneck pace, to fill another Jason Bourne trilogy. Thriller fans will love it. --Thomas Gaughan

Review
"Austin's Jeff Abbott continues his winning streak with Downfall, his third thriller starring ex-CIA spy, parkour runner and man-of-dark-wit Sam Capra...As usual, this Capra thriller's pounding intensity is leavened by Sam's sense of humor, even when he's being hunted, tortured or betrayed."―The Dallas Morning News

"Abbott knows how to slowly ratchet up the tension while maintaining great characters and terrific plot twists...The Sam Capra series gets better with each outing, and DOWNFALL is a "must read" for the action-thriller fan."―Associated Press

"Bestseller Abbott packs a lifetime of thrills and suspense into a mere five days...Abbott excels at spinning complex webs of intrigue combining psychological twists and abundant action...Sam is both pawn and knight in an exciting chess game that moves from San Francisco to Portland, Ore.; Denver; Las Vegas; and Chicago."―Publishers Weekly

"DOWNFALL is a pulsing adventure that will keep readers' attention riveted....Abbott's descriptions are vivid: car chases, fight scenes, interrogations and risky escape scenarios. The narrative shocks, repels, intrigues and ultimately draws the reader in as Sam maneuvers to gain the advantage. This is another Abbott thriller that packs a punch."―Fredericksburg Free-Lance Star

"Often wildly entertaining...Abbott manages to pack a ton of action into a book that covers a mere five days."―Austin-American Statesman

"Filled with action, intrigue, twists, and a variety of locales. At 464 pages, it's perfect for a summer weekend's reading pleasure."―Fort Worth Star-Telegram

"Action-packed, never-stop-for-a-breath storytelling."―Dallas Morning News

"Abbott is one of the best thriller writers in the business, and he delivers action and complex characters in an explosive cocktail. The next Capra novel cannot come fast enough."―Associated Press on The Last Minute

"Like Adrenaline, this is a fast-paced thriller with a likable, morally conflicted hero. Sam is in a difficult situation, seemingly forced to commit murder to find his son, and--this is a testament to Abbott's skills as a storyteller--we really don't know whether he will follow through. The book ends on an upbeat note, giving Sam a certain amount of closure. Still, let's hope Abbott isn't through with Sam. He's a very well drawn character, and it would be nice to see him again."―Booklist on The Last Minute

"The Adrenaline rush that won't stop."―San Antonio Express-News

"Twisty, turny, and terrific."―USA TODAY on Adrenaline

"[An] edgy, seat-of-your-pants spy caper."―Entertainment Weekly on Adrenaline

"Outstanding . . . genuinely moving . . . Abbott hits full stride early on and never lets up. Readers who thrive on a relentless narrative pace and a straight line to the finish won't be disappointed."―Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Adrenaline

"Extremely compelling . . . a thriller that will get even the most jaded reader's pulse racing . . . a grand slam home run."―Associated Press on Adrenaline

Review
"Hesse is not a traditional teller of tales but a novelist of ideas and a moralist of a high order...The autobiographical undercurrent gives "Damian" an Existentialist intensity and a depth of understanding that are rare in contemporary fiction." -- "Saturday Review""Hesse is a writer whose peculiar vision is worth inspecting. His world is shadowy and close to areas of the heart that will probably never see light. But his vision is a rare one, as commendable for its humane solicitude as for its strangeness and unearthly color."-- "National Review"

From the Back Cover

In Demian, one of the great writers of the twentieth century tells the dramatic story of young, docile Emil Sinclair's descent--led by precocious shoolmate Max Demian--into a secret and dangerous world of petty crime and revolt against convention and eventual awakening to selfhood.

"The electrifying influence exercised on a whole generation just after the First World War by Demian...is unforgettable. With uncanny accuracy this poetic work struck the nerve of the times and called forth grateful rapture from a whole youthful generation who believed that an interpreter of their innermost life had risen from their own midst."
-- From the Introduction by Thomas Mann

The Second Treatise of Government and A Letter Concerning Toleration (Dover Thrift Editions), by John Locke

In The Second Treatise of Government, John Locke answered two objectives: to refute the concept of the monarchy's divine right and to establish a theory reconciling civil liberties with political order. His Letter Concerning Toleration rests on the same basic principles as his political theory; Locke's main argument for toleration is a corollary of his theory of the nature of civil society. The basis of social and political philosophy for generations, these works laid the foundation of the modern democratic state in England and abroad. Their enduring importance makes them essential reading for students of philosophy, history, and political science.

About the Author
John Locke (1632–1704), widely known as the Father of Classical Liberalism, was an English philosopher and physician regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers. Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Francis Bacon, he is equally important to social contract theory. His work greatly affected the development of epistemology and political philosophy. His writings influenced Voltaire and Rousseau, many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American revolutionaries. His contributions to classical republicanism and liberal theory are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence.

A must read
By Robert C. Wheeler
Human freedom espoused with forceful reasoning. Even though the work starts with religious presuppositions the arguments are just as valid for those espousing no religious viewpoint. This is a classic exposition of the cause of human freedom and should be read by all who value the ideals of the enlightenment and the right of all men to determine by popular approval their form of government.
Most notably, Locke states that religious associations exist by the voluntary assent of their members. A radical idea for the time.

John Locke is the greatest philosopher and political thoerist to ever live. He wrote 'The Second Treatise of Governmen,' which is his greatest work. Ipso facto, 'The Second Treatise of Government' is the greatest philosophical and political text ever written. So...read it!

A Short Must Read
By grim norseman
A short must read for anyone desiring to know what was bouncing around in the founding father's heads during the American revolution, and what philosophies inspired them to write the founding documents. So inexpensive, it can sit on your bookshelf while you read all of the writings we as Americans live by, which this book helped inspire. };>{>
