Anne of Warwick is an historical novel based on the lives of the last Plantagent king and queen of England who stood at the center of treason, turmoil and tragedy. For the Queen, Anne Neville, daughter of Warwick the Kingmaker, and wife to Richard III, life becomes one of survival. As she struggles in her love for Richard, she becomes caught up in the desire of others to claim the throne of England by treachery, deceit and murder in the War of the Roses between the houses of York and Lancaster.

Romantic novel on Anne Neville and her husband King Richard III

This book about Anne Neville, younger daughter of the Earl of Warwick the Kingmaker, and her husband Richard Plantagenet Duke of Gloucester, later King Richard III, is also available in print edition under the title “Desire the Kingdom”.
The book starts in 1470 when Anne and her family are forced to flee into exile in France following her father’s second unsuccessful rebellion against King Edward IV. Even though she is in love with the king’s younger brother Richard, who returns her affection, Anne is married to Prince Edward of Lancaster to seal her fathers’ switch of allegiance from the House of York to the Lancastrian faction. She is then orphaned and widowed at the battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury and after a fierce opposition to her marriage to Richard on the part of George of Clarence (who smuggles her into a cookshop disguised as a kitchen maid to keep her away from her brother) she is eventually rescued by Richard with whom she will share the resto of her unfortunately brief and ultimately dramatic life.
The story is mainly told through Anne’s point of view even if Richard’s stance is also taken into consideration. The plot is mainly based on Paul Murray Kendall’s biography of Richard III with some original intuitions in the tale (e.g. Anne’s suicidal thoughts after her kidnapping in the cookshop) that could have been further developed had the premature death of the author not prevented a revision of the first draught.
The book therefore falls short of a potentially better result and does not reach the poignancy of other novels on Anne Neville like “The White Queen of Middleham”, “My Lords Richard” or the most recent “Virgin widow”, but it is a pleasant read that you might like to add to your Ricardian collection if you have already read other unmissable works like “The Sunne in Splendour” by Sharon Kay Penman or Rhoda Edwards’ “Some touch of Pity” and “Fortune’s Wheel”. Rating would have been 3 stars, but I added one star in memory of the prematurely deceased author.

Not the best

Of all of the books of this genre I did not find this to be a good read. Often found language errors and spelling errors. Aren't there editors anymore? A bit stilted and characterizations seemed a bit flat.

Worthwhile read

Debated whether to rate as 3 or 4 stars, but it was an enjoyable read, so I went with 4. As another reviewer mentioned, there are typos and language errors, with greater frequency in the last few chapters, I thought; more thorough editing would have been helpful. Anne Neville is an interesting historical figure that doesn't get a lot of attention. She was married to heirs on both the Lancaster and York sides, so her life is full of upheaval. I got interested in her from watching The White Queen series. Richard III and Anne in this book are a tad bit one dimensional, written as pretty much always being good. Still, I liked their story as it was written in this novel, and it's sad that things went so badly for them when they did seem to have good intentions. I've enjoyed finding out more about Richard III from other sources in recent years, and it seems more typical now to portray him not as the killer of the Princes in the Tower, but one who was framed for it. The only thing I would have really preferred to be included is more of Anne's younger years, but the author did as great job of covering a lot of material even without that time period.
