What did the little ones do back in the days when "children should be seen and not heard"? How were they schooled, what did they wear, and which games did they play? This eye-opening survey revisits the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries for an illustrated look at the lives of Colonial America's youngest citizens
The first American historian to chronicle everyday life of the colonial era, Alice Morse Earle conducted years of research, based on letters, official records, diaries, and other accounts. A vivid portrait emerges, depicting a child's world of hornbooks and primers; lessons in manners and religion; methods of discipline; and toys, pastimes, and other amusements. The author offers a broader perspective by comparing conditions in America with those of England. More than 120 illustrations include reproductions of images by the era's finest artists, including Copley and Peale. "The book is one of historical interest and value," declared The New York Times, praising it as "beautifully illustrated [and] a charming book for old or young."

Makes me glad I wasn't alive then...
By Anne S.
To be honest, this book was so depressing, I didn't finish it. That's not to say it isn't well-written though, because it is. It really takes you into the Puritan mindset, and how the world was for children back then. The author uses letters, diaries, paintings, and passages of books from colonial times to paint a picture of the dreary Puritan world that was a child's reality. I remember going to a museum once that displayed early 19th century "samplers" (needlework pictures done by young girls) and the tour guide pointing out that there was a letter intentionally stitched backwards. She explained this was because only God was perfect, so they had to make a mistake in the sampler to make sure it wasn't perfect. That is the epitome of the Purtian mindset for me, and this book really made me understand that mindset.
From a historical point of view, this book is a great resource. It was interesting to finally learn what a horn book was, for example, and I really enjoyed the photographs of the children's toys and furniture. I intend to keep the book and browse through it once in a while, but it's too much of a downer for bedtime reading.

Explore the life of New England children in early America
By Kahne Questor
Child Life in Colonial Times (Dover Books on Americana) Is a nice little reference book written in the early 1900's. Because of the era in which it was written, there are some references of a racial nature, but they are not offensive, just unexpected. I'm enjoying the scholarship of the text.
