Baby Names Not!

I got this book based on the title. Baby Names to Live By. It is a book of baby names, that is about it. It is very limited! Some of the most common names that are biblical aren't even in this book. You would think the book would have the meaning of the names as well - NOT IN THIS BOOK! It talks a lot about famous people and their name. I thought this book would be fun for my children to see what names mean, and clearly this is not the book for that.

112 Publishing Professionals Talk About Writing

This is a great little e-book of quotes from Christian publishing professionals. The quotes vary in length and quality, but if you are in, or want to be in, the Christian publishing industry, this is a must have. The advice varies from person to person, but most center around either: God (your calling), the craft, the art, the business (pay especial attention to the acquisitions editors- of which there are several. Gold mine!), and inspiration vs perspiration.

And, in case you're wondering about the quality of those quoted who are not listed by name in the description above, rest assured, these ARE professionals. There are several agents (from reputable firms), editors, acquisitions editors, etc from big name publishing houses (off the top of my head, at least one from Bethany House and at least one from Tyndale), and many more prolific authors, such as Tracie Peterson, Lisa Samson (love her Hollywood Nobody series!), Kristin Billerbeck, Robin Lee Hatcher, Jenny B. Jones, Robert Liparulo, Alton Gansky, etc. They span pretty much every major genre out there, though most of the advice is not genre specific.

As for layout, this is done in alphabetical order. If you go to the table of contents, the individual names are linked, so you can just click there to go to a favorite. Each author/editor/agent/whatever-else has a short blurb about who they are- books they've written, their position in a publishing house, agent, etc along with a link to their website. For most, the quotes are of the perfect little bite size that you can pull up and read for a bit of inspiration before starting on your novel for the day- unless you're like me and just keep reading one after another after another.

All in all, I'm very pleased with this book, and I do recommend it to writers and aspiring writers.

Best for Ages: 15 and up

When I started writing books, I often wished I could ask authors for their best advice. This book fulfilled those dreams. I only wish I had this book sooner.

The formatting of this book made it not only easy to read, but also a quick read. I was able to read and re-read the authors whose advice I found helpful, and I could quickly move on if an author had advice that wasn't helpful.
The advice itself was great. Some of it was more helpful than other parts. Some of the advice made me smile, some made me think, and some drew me closer to God. No matter what stage of writing you are in, this book has advice and encouragement that is relevant to you.

One of the things that sets this book apart from many other books is that it gives advice from editors, agents, and other people in the publishing industry in addition to that from authors.
I highly recommend that every author get a copy of this book. I would also like to thank C. J. Darlington for putting this together.

But in the treasury of stories he left behind are such classics of the genre as "The Gift of the Magi," "The Last Leaf," "The Ransom of Red Chief," "The Voice of the City" and "The Cop and the Anthem" — all included in this choice selection. Born William Sidney Porter in 1862, O. Henry first lived a checkered life as a cowhand, bank teller, reporter, embezzler, and convict. Then, in a last-minute reversal worthy of one of his own stories, he turned to fiction, and became a celebrated author of ironic miniatures. "The Gift of the Magi" is perhaps his most famous creation. And while this exploration of love and gift-giving doesn't exactly plumb the depths of human behavior, it does leave us with the final picture of Jim (sans watch) and Della (sans hair, or most of it), which has induced even the crankiest readers to shed a tear since it first appeared in 1906. Get out your handkerchiefs!

About the Author
O. Henry (William Sydney Porter, 1862-1910) was an American short-story writer. In his writing, O. Henry was able to catch the color and movement of the city and showed a genuine sympathy for ordinary people. Some of his works include "Cabbages and Kings", "Roads of Destiny", and "Strictly Business" among many others.

Good for the price.

***Just for the record, this book contains the following stories: "The Gift of the Magi", "The Cop and the Anthem", "Springtime a la Carte", "The Green Door", "After Twenty Years", "The Furnished Room", "The Pimienta Pancakes", "The Last Leaf", "The Voice of the City", "While the Auto Awaits", "A Retrieved Reformation", "A Municipal Report", "A Newspaper Story", "The Ransom of Red Chief", "A Ghost of a Chance", and "Makes the Whole World Kin".
Considering the price, and how many stories are in here, it's great! But, it is a very flimsy paperback, and contains just the bare stories. So if you're looking for some history on O. Henry, or some fancy introductions or footnotes, this is not the book for you.
Although, O. Henry was such a great writer, I myself don't think you really need footnotes, etc. The stories are so well constructed in themselves that this really is a good book.
By the way, my personal favorite is "The Last Leaf". To me it is leaps and bounds better than "The Gift of the Magi", but maybe that's just me. :-)

Great Introductory Compilation

For my money, this Dover edition is the perfect introduction to the works of O. Henry. It contains several of his best stories in an order that is not jarring, considering they come from different collections.
I am a writer of short stories, and there is no better practitioner of the art than O. Henry. Perhaps in today's world, with the New Yorker style being touted as *the* way to write short stories, O. Henry is scoffed at. But, if you look close, Henry's stories have one thing those don't--an ending.
In fact, O. Henry stories are famous for their endings. Often called "twist" endings, they show the inherent unpredictability of life.
What is often missed, however, is Henry's knack for characterization, his evocative use of setting and description, and his readability. I put O. Henry up there with other short story writers like Flannery O'Connor and John Updike.
So, start with the Dover edition and if you find that you, too, love the work of O. Henry then graduate to a more comprehensive collection. And if not, hey, you're not out much money, right?

Touches your heart with simplicity and genuineness

Those stories progress slowly and quietly until you get to the last paragraph. The bottom line. Then suddenly you are flooded with strong feelings: either joy or sorrow - it usually moves your heart. I loved those stories since the first time I learned them, in high school, and this book gave me the opportunity to read it in the original language for the first time (I read it in Hebrew the other times...). It was challanging, but it is worth it. It is a perfect book to take with you on your daily bus ride, when you are blue, or just in any day that you feel like reading something which is pure nice literature. I hope you read it and enjoy.
