To Emerson and other New England transcendentalists who knew him best, Thoreau often seemed prickly and antisocial. But in his writings he was (and is) a man anyone would treasure as a friend, sounding board, and spiritual advisor — a man who trafficked in that rarest of commodities, the truth. Even now, almost 140 years after his death, his voice remains clear and compelling, and his truths are as relevant and meaningful as they were in his lifetime.
In this treasury of more than 450 striking, thought-provoking excerpts from his writing, you will hear him railing against injustice, giving voice to his love of nature, and advocating the simplicity and conscious living that he brought to fruition during his two-year stay at Walden Pond. "To be serene and successful we must be at one with the universe." "Our life is frittered away by detail…. Simplify, simplify."
Grouped under 17 headings, including "Education," "Freedom and Individualism," "Friendship and Love," "Human Nature," "Literature and Writing," "Nature," "Season," and "Solitude," the quotations include such favorites as "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation" and "Some circumstantial evidence is very strong, as when you find a trout in the milk." Whatever category they are in, Thoreau's observations provide so much inspiration and intellectual nourishment that browsing through this book becomes an exciting voyage of discovery into the heart of the human condition.

About the Author
Henry David Thoreau was born in 1817 in Concord, Massachusetts. He spent time as a school teacher after attending Harvard College but was dismissed for his refusal to administer corporal punishment. In 1845, wanting to write his first book, he moved to Walden Pond and built his cabin on land owned by Ralph Waldo Emerson. It was during his time at Walden that Thoreau was imprisoned briefly for not paying taxes; this experience became the basis for his well-known essay "Civil Disobedience." He died of tuberculosis in 1862 at the age of 44.

If you like Henry David Thoreau, you will enjoy this wonderful collection of quotations taken from his many published works.
By Joseph J. Truncale
I have always loved quotation books of all kinds, and the best ones most often come from the old masters of literature and philosophy like Aristotle, Rand, Franklin, Jefferson, Sandburg, Edger Allen Poe, and Henry David Thoreau to name just a few.
This Dover volume has more than 450 quotations from Thoreau's writings. Many of them came from his journal and other material. His rebellious nature can be felt in many of his writings. When he saw injustice he commented on it. When he viewed the beauty of nature he often wrote about how much he appreciated the simple life. His search for truth, beauty and the meaning of living a good life can be understood in this small volume of quotations.
A very small sample of the treasured comments in this text are these gems: "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation." "The fault-finder will find faults even in paradise." " That government is best which governs not at all." 'Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them." "You cannot walk too early in new-fallen snow to get the sense of purity, novelty, and unexploredness."
This 57 page volume is organized into 17 sections which are as follows:
Contemplation and reflection, day and night, education, freedom and individualism, friendship and love, himself, human nature, law and government, literature and writing , money and business, morality and conduct, nature: animals, trees, water, religion, solitude, travel, work and leisure. Some of his views may have been considered radical in his time, but truth always stands the test of time. This book was a pleasure to read.
Anyone who desires to learn the innermost thoughts of a great writer should check out this text.

Spread the word on this true pioneer in so many wayus
By Arctic Voice Earl
Summer is here and as we all go out and work in the garden, or take hikes with our dogs, we can always get more perspective on nature from Henry David Thoreau. I've already heard from several friends who recently traveled to Walden Pond and saw firsthand the environment where Thoreau worked, and kept notes on life around him in his little cabin.
I love to include some of Thoreau's Quotations in many of my e-mails and even in snail mail letters. (I still love to communicate by letter) and have found some friends and relatives who share that desire.
This book on Thoreau quotations is so helpful. "We discover a new world every time that we see the earth after it has been covered for a season with snow."
And "Not till June can the grass be said to be waving in the fields. When the frogs dream and and the grass waves and the buttercups toss their heads and the heat disposes to bathe in the ponds and streams, then is summer begun."
I keep this book close, both at home and when on vacations. Hope you can enjoy it too!

Quick Thoreauspiration
By Randall P. Bachman
It is best to read Thoreau in order to fully explore and enjoy his stream of thought. But once you have a good foundation and his prose are part of your vocabulary, it is often necessary to have a quote book like this to keep his marvelous insights in the forefront of your thoughts. This little book was perfect for this. I enjoy the 5 or so minutes here and there where I can drink a quick shot of Thoreau and stimulate my thinking. I didn't find it as useful as a quick look-up guide far a particular quote I was searching for.
