To the green wood, green wood tree.

I suspect that I'm the only one who remembers this. In the early to mid 1980s I owned a Commodore 64 computer game (yes, I am that ancient and wise) called "Below the Root". In this game you could chose to be one of four players. A small boy named Raamo, a small girl named Pomma, a tall boy named Neric, or a tall girl named Genaa. The goal was to travel under the root, so to speak, to rescue a boy of great power. You had all sorts of cool powers, depending on which character you were. Some characters could pense people, thereby determining their emotions (hence I learned the word "avarice" at a very young age). Some could kiniport objects without touching them. Others could grunsprek, creating roots and plants that would allow you walk, virtually, on air. I loved the game and it was one of the few I actually won. Now, years and years later, I find that the basis of this favorite computer game was a well-written and infinitely entrancing novel of the same name. Authored by the accomplished Zilpha Keatley Snyder, the book speaks freely about the price of creating and maintaining a free society.

Raamo is thirteen years old and lives happily in a land called Green-sky. His world is a society created in the tops of the trees. Here, people have fashioned a wonderful peaceful life for themselves, never engaging in violence or negative feelings of any kind. The only source of distress, in fact, comes from the evil Pash-shan that live below the surface of the earth below. Inhuman creatures that steal children and adults when they can, the Pash-shan are imprisoned in their lairs by a thick vine called the Wissenroot. Now Raamo has been given the chance to join the spiritual and governmental leaders of the land, named the Ol-zhaan. Fame and glory are his, but the intervention of a fellow Ol-zhaan named Neric throws everything Raamo thought he knew about his world into chaos. What if there is more to the Pash-shan than meets the eye? What activities do the Ol-zhaan really engage in? What are the secrets that seem to be destroying society as Raamo and his friends and family know it? And what is the price happiness?

Beginning this book I was immediately struck from the outset on how similar it was, in many ways, to Lois Lowry's "The Giver". Both books are futuristic dystopian tales that focus on a boy learning that he is to be given a job of great importance. Through this job this boy learns that his society is not perfect in the least, and that he must personally work to change the way things are. But this book is also incredibly similar to H.G. Wells's "The Time Machine" too. In both cases we have the happy dwellers above the earth and the miserable dwellers below. Yet this book isn't like either of these novels at its heart. Instead, it is a truly original tales about a society that has taken extreme measures to maintain the serenity and innocence of its tree-dwelling population.

The characters in this book are fully developed and wonderfully flawed. There's nothing worse than reading a story in which every person you meet is either a coal-hearted villain or a pure sweet-blooded soul. Our hero, Raamo, is uncertain of himself and his world. Unlike his companions he is reluctant to jump to conclusions at any time and it is his nobility and refusal to be considered above his peers that truly sets him apart. His fellow Ol-zhaan Genaa is far more likely to rush to conclusions in pursuit of her own goals, but she's a good person at heart. The sexy Neric (my interpretation, not the book's) is also apt to leap before he looks, but his intentions are pure. The book also ends with a satisfying "to be continued..." feel that leaves you wanting more without feeling cheated. A difficult task to say the least.

Poor "Below the Root" has been forgotten over the years, y'know. When people discuss good fantasy books, its name is rarely mentioned. Nonetheless, I feel this series is one of the best there is. If you happen to get a copy of this book (and being out-of-print that might be a bit of a trick) make certain you get one that contains illustrations by the adroit Alton Raible. Perfectly complimenting the text, Raible's interpretations of certain scenes are not only adept but near perfect (with the exception of a single shot that is more bizarre than apt). I really can't recommend this book enough. It's true that there's a fair amount of exposition here and there, but I think kids that wade through it will be amply awarded. This hereby ranks as my favorite book discovered by way of a computer game. Great praise indeed!

Secrecy is the root of tyranny

This is the outstanding introduction to the Greensky trilogy, a compelling philosophical exploration ingeniously disguised as a children's fantasy series. In the fantasy world of Greensky, the peaceful Kindar live in trees, read each others' minds, and glide from place to place with silken wings. Guided by their revered rulers, the Ol-Zhaan, the Kindar have nothing to fear... except for falling from their paradise and being forced to face the demons that lurk beneath the forest floor.
In addition to providing a marvelous coming-of-age tale set in a wonderful new world, this book will provoke you to ponder and debate important questions about the nature of good and evil. Is it possible to eliminate violence from a society by segregating and repressing the passions? Should governments/priesthoods/scientists withold potentially dangerous knowledge from laypeople to protect them, and does this unshared power inevitably corrupt?
Read this book with your kids!

Superb ideas, Superb worldbuilding, Superb writing.

As others, I was aquainted with this book through playing the computer game as a child. Only at the age of 25 did I actually read the book. I was prepared for a letdown as I understood this to be a children's book. Boy was I wrong! the quality of writing is superb, the sheer amount of imagination that has gone into creating this magical, but also highly realized, world, is astounding. THis trilogy deals with the idea of pacifism in a way I have never seen before. This should be a must read for any child, teenager, or adult.

J. KRISHNAMURTI Jiddu Krishnamurti (May 12, 1895–February 17, 1986) was a world renowned writer and speaker on philosophical and spiritual subjects. His subject matter included: the purpose of meditation, human relationships, the nature of the mind, and how to enact positive change in global society. Krishnamurti was born into a Telugu Brahmin family in what was then colonial India. In early adolescence, he had a chance encounter with prominent occultist and high-ranking theosophist C.W. Leadbeater in the grounds of the Theosophical Society headquarters at Adyar in Madras (now Chennai). He was subsequently raised under the tutelage of Annie Besant and C.W. Leadbeater, leaders of the Society at the time, who believed him to be a "vehicle" for an expected World Teacher. As a young man, he disavowed this idea and dissolved the world-wide organization (the Order of the Star) established to support it. He claimed allegiance to no nationality, caste, religion, or philosophy, and spent the rest of his life traveling the world as an individual speaker, speaking to large and small groups, as well as with interested individuals. He authored a number of books, among them The First and Last Freedom, The Only Revolution, and Krishnamurti's Notebook. :” In addition, a large collection of his talks and discussions have been published. At age 90, he addressed the United Nations on the subject of peace and awareness, and was awarded the 1984 UN Peace Medal. His last public talk was in Madras, India, in January 1986, a month before his death at home in Ojai, California. His supporters, working through several non-profit foundations, oversee a number of independent schools centered on his views on education – in India, England and the United States – and continue to transcribe and distribute many of his thousands of talks, group and individual discussions, and other writings, publishing them in a variety of formats including print, audio, video and digital formats as well as online, in many languages.

Divine Asymptote: A Radical Vision of the Grandest Unification Always a problem, particularly in the West, is that the vast majority have absolutely no context by which to begin to assimilate Krishnamurti's message. The Western mind has, for the most part, a fragmented perspective on reality, making K's meaning practically inscrutable to its ear. Without that context there is little chance that significant numbers will ever be exposed to his insights. Physics, and particularly David Bohm's fragmentation paradigm, provide a singular vehicle which can open the door for many. Really helpful

As a novice website creator, i found this book to be a great help. It is written in easy to read (and understand) language. It walked me through the thought processes required before choosing a web designer, hosting service, domain name, etc. It gives pros and cons for different choices that need to be made and offers suggestions, as well. This book is great for a first time website builder.

Easy to follow step by step

I had wanted to do my own site for a while now, and even started a blog a couple of times on a couple of the free services. I read this, and it outlines the steps to follow. I learned using the free services are okay, I just need to do certain things to make it more polished and presentable. I have done this a couple of times now, and this guide was easy to follow. This would work for anyone new to building websites, or who is not happy with the way their site is going now.

A light goes on

This is one book about karate that every karateka in the world should own and read repeatedly.

Over the years of training I'd been becoming increasingly frustrated at the ineffectiveness of such things as "blocks", they are completely unnatural and take twice as long to execute as the punches and other attacks they are supposed to defend against. Well... Guess what. They aren't "blocks", they are "uke" which means "receiver". Ian's book is enlightening, an uke isn't just a block, it's a way of turning a natural human reaction when attacked to our advantage and are best used almost the reverse of the way traditionally taught.

And kata, those bizarre and useless dances we do every week? Um no... the kata really are the core of fighting, they really do teach some brutal and effective fighting techniques, but only if you understand how to read them. This is the real beauty of the book, it gives you a key to unlock the kata, a set of simple common sense rules which turn the kata into a reference library to be studied rather than a dance to be performed.

Finally, the book exhorts us to train all of the techniques encoded in the kata, that includes punches, kicks, locks, throws because it's only when we actually practice them that we are practicing karate. Until we do, we're perfoming kickboxing and techniques which are of dubious use in a real situation.

If you practice karate, of any "style" buy this book and read it.

Excellent - hard to find but very well worth it!

Bunkai Jutsu is extremely well done. Iain Abernethy is one of the few authors who truly understands and is able to communicate that martial arts are at their core about combat. Kata is not dance practice nor is it aerobic training (though that may be a legitimate side benefit of performing it). It is the fundamental basis of a fighting art. Bunkai are the kata applications practitioners can use for real-life self-defense. Abernethy provides an easy to read approach to understanding and utilizing these applications.

If you know how to decipher them, all aspects of fighting can be found in kata, including kicking, striking, grappling, strangling, pressure point techniques, and throwing applications. The contents of this impressive tome include a brief history of kata, a treatise on the nature of real fighting, Iain's rules of bunkai (how to figure out what the kata is telling you), pre-emptive striking, entrance and exit techniques, ground fighting, the "true" use of blocks, the purpose of stances, kata-based sparring, and much more. This is all stuff you can use in real life combat. The section on vital points is illuminating.

This book is well worth the money even though it's a little hard to find and may take awhile to get (almost 4 weeks when I ordered it on Amazon). It is one of the very few books I categorically believe that every martial artist should own. I heartily recommend it!

Iain Abernethy really knows his stuff. He holds a godan (5th degree black belt) in applied karate from the British Combat Association, one of the world's leading groups for close-quarter combat and practical martial arts. He is also a yodan (4th degree black belt) in Wado-Ryu karate (English Karate Governing Body), a member of the Combat Hall of Fame, and a former national level kata judge in the UK. He is the author of four books on applied karate: Bunkai-Jutsu: The Practical Application of Karate Kata, Throws for Strikers: The Forgotten Throws of Karate, Boxing, and Taekwondo, Karate's Grappling Methods, and Arm-Locks for All Styles. Sensei Abernethy has produced numerous DVD's and videos on applied karate and kata bunkai and is a regular contributor to all of UK's leading martial arts magazines.

Excellent book on kata interpretation

In this book, Iain Abernathy has tried to present karate practitioners with a Shotokan lineage with a "decoder ring" of sorts for their various kata. The result is a fascinating read to say the least. He begins with a basic history of the kata, explaining why they look the way they do now. Then he moves on to discuss the performance of the kata, from the beginning learning process to the various mental aspects. This section alone is eye-opening. The chapter on the rules of bunkai is one that all practitioners of karate should read. With rules such as "Every Kata Move Is Designed For Use In Combat", Abernathy comes across as a traditionalist; rules such as "Real Fights Are Sloppy Affairs" make him seem like a realist; and with rules like "There Is A Need For Skills At Every Range", he seems quite progressive. These various, complementary aspects give credence to the author's point of view by appealing to nearly everyone. Gradually, through these chapters, the reader can begin to see the pieces of the bunkai puzzle start to fall into place.

Next, we take a sort of side-journey to examine the basics of how real fights occur. This is necessary to understand the environment in which karateka will apply the bunkai. He then inserts a chapter on the "Magnitude of Kata", and we begin to see his interpretations of classical karate kata as he describes how the principles of kata come alive in real situations.

Next, we move on to the actual, technical aspects of fighting contained within the kata. Atemi (striking) is first, with Abernathy describing the attributes necessary for effective striking, how they apply to kata, and some basic training tools. Then, since we've already been exposed to the basic striking tools, he gives us a list of anatomical weak points of which to strike. If I may be critical here, while I can't dispute that the points he describes are vulnerable to attack, he seems to imply that striking some of these points will lead to certain death. Like most traditional karateka, he seems to assume maximum possible, versus realistic, damage. The next chapter is on pre-emptive striking, in which he explains that the famous quote "There is no first strike in karate" doesn't necessarily exclude pre-emptive striking. He makes a pretty convincing argument, even using further quotes from Funakoshi to back up his claims. A rare chapter on entering and exiting techniques follows, which also covers attacking the eyes, throat, and groin. Following that is a chapter on throws and takedowns (including, yes, those found in kata), and then a chapter on the joint-locks of kata. I particularly enjoyed this section, as the opening of Pinan Yondan has been driving me nuts for years. Also in that chapter, he addresses distractions to set up joint-locks, and some "sticking-hands" type movement found in the katas. Next is "Karate on the Ground", which includes both striking and grappling. The "true" applications of blocks follows, much to my appreciation. Apparently, the term "uke" doesn't necessarily mean to block, but also to counter, to receive, or to respond. With this definition, many so-called blocks now make more sense, as demonstrated in this book. After that is a chapter on stances, including their use as obstacles to the attacker. The book finishes up with a chapter on kata-based sparring. The variety of sparring should give instructors limitless ideas for adding variety and valuable lessons to their karate classes.

Overall, a very good book. I wish I'd had access to it when I was a blue belt. The book is easy to follow, well-written, and really succeeded in piquing my curiosity about bunkai. There were classic quotes from the old karate masters throughout the book, adding some authenticity to the context. This is a book I'd highly recommend to any karate practitioner who feels unsatisfied with the explainations they've been given for their kata.

Simply Amazing

About the Author
E. E. Cummings (1894–1962) was among the most influential, widely read, and revered modernist poets. He was also a playwright, a painter, and a writer of prose. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard University and, during World War I, served with an ambulance corps in France. He spent three months in a French detention camp and subsequently wrote The Enormous Room, a highly acclaimed criticism of World War I. After the war, Cummings returned to the States and published his first collection of poetry, Tulips & Chimneys, which was characterized by his innovative style: pushing the boundaries of language and form while discussing love, nature, and war with sensuousness and glee. He spent the rest of his life painting, writing poetry, and enjoying widespread popularity and success.

Cumming's Salvation...

Reading Cumming's poetry was never a priority in my school days, except such excerpts as appeared in my far from comprehensive American Lit book. After reading this, I wish I'd paid more attention to this truly gifted writer.
The Enormous Room is the story of Cumming's three month incarceration at La Ferte Mace, a squalid French prison camp. Cummings is locked up as accessory to exercise of free speech, his friend B. (William Brown) having written a letter with some pro German sentiments. What Cummings experienced in those three months and the stories of the men and women he met are, despite the straits of the polyglot texture of the book, never other than fascinating. At moments touching (the stories of the Surplice and The Wanderer's family), hilarious (the description of the Man In the Orange Cap is hysterical), and maddening (the smoking of the four les putains), this is a brilliant weft of memorable characters and not a little invective for the slipshod French goverment.
Something I noticed. Though the book claims as its primary influence Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, I noticed a similarity with Thoreau's Walden. In both books, there is the idea of self-abnegation breeding liberty and peace of mind. The idea is to shear away all luxuries, all privileges. But Thoreau had one very important luxury to his credit: Free will. Whereas Thoreau chose his isolated and straitened existence near Walden Pond, Cummings' was involuntary. So, if the touchstone of freedom both men share is valid, is not Cummings, by virtue of the unrequested nature of his imprisonment, the freer of the two men?
This is a fascinating, thought provoking, ribald and intelligent book. I only regret that the Fighting Sheeney was never given commupance...

An Enormous Achievement

Written by America's most inventive poet, "The Enormous Room" is a book of prose set in a French detention camp during World War One. It is a coming-of-age story in which events happen, not always to the narrator (E.E. Cummings), but to the inhabitants of a place that serves as a microcosm for all the folly and brutality of war itself. As a war narrative it is unique -- unlike Hemingway's "Farewell to Arms" or Remarque's "All Quiet on the Western Front," the central story doesn't take place on the front lines. The plot of the book is basically non-linear, with the exception of the first three or four chapters, and several passages are written in French (thankfully a glossary of foreign terms is printed at the back of the book). I would describe Cummings' story as a stream-of-consciousness dialogue with himself, written in the language of a talented budding poet. Most memorable are the wonderful characters Cummings encountered during his short stay at La Ferte Mace, the name of the camp in which he was interned. They are objects of torn humanity and how terrible it must have been for him to leave them, knowing that upon his release many would languish in prison for the rest of their lives. "The Enormous Room" is a unique historical fiction. It is not an easy read, but it is one of those books that is even more difficult to put down. I have never read another book quite like it. [P.S.: There are two editions of the book, one published by Boni & Liveright and the other by Penquin Classics. The Liveright edition is the better one (and naturally harder to locate online or in book stores), and includes samples of drawings that Cummings made during his confinement.]

First published in 1922, THE ENORMOUS ROOM, is Edward E. Cummings's remembrance of his six-months stay in a French detention center before World War I. Almost never published, this odd little book details how Cummings and another American,working as volunteer ambulance-drivers, were picked up on suspicion of treason and then held in a kind of limbo, in "The Enormous Room," with other unfortunates whose only crime was not being French, and were hence also considered traitors. The almost six months spent imprisoned under horrendous conditions left indelible memories of the immigrants Cummings met there, and also shaped his distrust for all in authority. The book may be slighly difficult for readers without a knowledge of a bit of French, but the delighful and swarmy character-descriptions that Cummings draws, should more than compensate for this. This book is eccentric, exquisitely written, and a true treat for any Cummings admirer who yearns for more insight into his life --before he was a poet, and before he was "e.e."

I like many of Hill's books, but I have several problems with this one. The premise is fine; the father dies, leaving mountains of debt, and the heroine, like the biblical Job, has one problem piled on after another. But the book ends abruptly, as though she suddenly got tired of the story. And within the story there is a hateful portrayal of Jews that, for me, makes the entire story creepy. It is not necessary to hate people of other religions in order to be a good Christian.

JOB'S NIECE by Grace Livingston Hill is an interesting inspirational historical romance set in 1920's United States. Ms. Livingston Hill is considered the pioneer of Christian Romance and her legacy continues. "Job's Niece" is book 11 in the "Love Endures" series,but can be read as a stand alone. This is the story of Doris Dunbar,her siblings,her very demanding stepmother and the mounting bills her father left at his death. And Angus Macdonald,a Scottish businessman,his widowed,aging mother,and his hope of a future in Europe. Fast paced story of hope,family,healing,faith,forgiveness and love.Can love bring salvation,hope and peace or more pain and hurt? I enjoy this author's stories.It just goes to show you Love does Endure. If you enjoy historical romance and family you will enjoy "Job's Niece". Another wonderful classic! Received for an honest review from the publisher.

Excellent read!

This is the story of Doris and her family. Her father has just died. Her stepmother is hysterical, inconsolable and useless. The father made a business venture before his death that turned out badly causing them to lose the home they live in. I've read a LOT of Ms Hill's books and while this is a very familiar theme with her this is one of her should reads! This is the story of Doris, her seventeen year old sister Rose, an older brother who has married unwisely, the very interesting younger siblings, the stepmother (Who is silly, selfish and weak) and the Macdonald family. I like the dimension the Macdonald family brings to the book. Angus Macdonald is facing his own life challenges and temptations but he dearly loves his mother so he employs a companion for her while he is to be away overseas.
