Even though Amazon lists this as the "Kindle Version" of the Hardcover, this is only the first section of the book. Amazon should NOT list this as a "Kindle Version". If you want the whole book, you need to buy the hardcover. Very deceptive advertising. This is the first time I have ever had an issue like this with Amazon. Very disappointed. I have always found Amazon to be the most trustworthy of retailers, so I was shocked that they allowed such a deceptive advertisement for this Kindle pamphlet (which is what it is because it is not a book).

After searching I found the full Kindle version is ASIN: B00A69DSHM. Amazon needs to change the link for the Kindle version on the hardcover page to this one instead to avoid this happening to others.

I thought I found a great deal for the Kindle version of this wonderful book I already owned in hard copy. $2?! Yes, please!! After purchasing, I discovered it was only volume 1 of 4. It will be $6 more if I would like the collection. I don't know about you, but I don't like the idea of buying my books in sections. I also don't like paying almost full price for the Kindle version of a book I already own. 5 stars for the hard copy, 1 star for the shady Kindle deal.

So Great I'd Recommend the Full Hard Copy Instead

This is great. So great that I wish I had purchased a hard copy instead of an ebook from the start. This devotional is great to share together, but I think it's greatest value is for independent readers to have their own interaction with the book. I ultimately bought the deluxe version so that my kids could read it on their own (instead of handing over my iPad).

And like other reviewers, I was excited by the low price and purchased without realizing that this was only part of the book. But that's on me. So the content is great, but consider buying the hard copy.

To spite her father, who won't allow her to wear slacks, Cat Kinsey, fastest runner in her school, decides not to compete in the annual school Play Day. When Zane Perkins, an Okie (his family is really from Texas), wins, she's miffed, not only because Zane's actually fast, but also because he's part of a social group her father and stepsister routinely disdain. When she meets Zane's little sister Sammy, though, Cat recognizes intolerance for what it is and, in the process of becoming involved with the Perkinses, learns to see her own family in a clearer light. Snyder loses touch with the Kinseys, whom she so dramatically characterizes at the outset, but she imparts a good deal about the lot of Dust Bowl nomads and orchestrates Cat's change from self-absorbed child to caring young woman with energy and enough verisimilitude to keep readers pleasantly involved. A Wonderful, Thought-Provoking Book

Cat Running is the emotional story of a sixth-grade girl who reluctantly becomes friends with a family of Dust Bowl refugees that have moved into her town. Although it may take readers a little while to get into the story, they will be glad they did in the end. Even students who are not normally fans of historical fiction will fall in love with this heart-wrenching story.

Children who read this will definitely have to be advanced readers to enjoy this book. The author goes into great detail when describing the setting of the story, which many children will find extremely interesting, but the ones who are not used to reading might be bored to tears. A lot of insight is to be gained from the setting, though. Many students will not have known much about the Dust Bowl and the Depression until they have read this book.

The characters in the book are also wonderful. Children will find it touching to see the relationship that Cat forms with the "Okies", especially the little girl, Sammy. And of course, the climax of the story centers on Sammy and her bout with pneumonia. It is truly moving to see the way Cat and Sammy's family care for her. Readers will no doubt find at least one character they can relate to, as there is a wide array of characters in this book.

The entire book carries an underlying theme that will teach such an important lesson to children-to look beyond physical differences and a family's background. The author cleverly ties lessons about poverty, prejudice, and helping those in need into this amazing story of self-discovery. The old cliché holds true: It's what's on the inside that counts.

If you or someone you know has ever been interested in sports, then "Cat Running" by Zilpha Snyder, is the right book for you. "Cat Running" is about a young girl who is attempting to grow up into an intellectual adult. She lives in a little town with her tight- knit family and goes to a little school- "Brownwood." Cat Kinsey is not an average girl in this town. She is the fastest runner and last year, easily won the school race. Her mother is a housewife and her father is never home. He is very old-fashioned and will not allow Cat to be and do everything she wants because he thinks that it is not proper for little girls to be running around and acting like boys. Cat loves running and she doesn't only do it because it is fun for her, she uses it as a way to deal with or run away from her problems. This year, a new boy came to their school. His name is Zane and he's an "okie"-this is what they called a person who is not wealthy or someone who is dirty and uneducated. Cat has seen him run before and she was amazed at how fast this kid was. She decided that at this year's race, she was going to need all the help she could get to win once more. Cat decided to ask her father if she could wear pants this year just like every other girl would be, but of course her father was opposed to it. This made Cat furious and she decided not to run in the race at all. Zane and Cat didn't get along, however, cat did become very good friends with Zane's little sister, Sammy... Read this book full of adventure and inseparable friendship and find out what real friendship is. I really liked this book because the descriptions were very detailed and that made it easy to imagine what is happening throughout the book. Also there is a lot of action and adventure, which keeps the reader "on their toes." There is a bit of humor and drama mixed into the plot and I think anyone that reads this book could relate in some way.

I have found a new friend. It feels like I have known James Crawford forever. In both the "Needed Killing" books, his character develops so naturally that by the end of the book, he could be my next-door neighbor. His personality is acerbic with an appreciation for irony and a brain that sleuths like Sherlock. It's also fun to lay the facade of "Shelbyville" over Tuscaloosa[, Alabama]. About the Author
Bill Fitts is a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve, graduated from Princeton University, and has made his living as a sailor, salesman, underwriter, account executive, accountant, systems administrator, information specialist, and, currently, professional writer. Prior to returning to Tuscaloosa in 1989, Bill lived in Florida, the Panama Canal Zone, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Georgia.
     Bill has written four books in the Needed Killing Series and is working on the fifth. He credits the tornado that ripped through Tuscaloosa on April 27, 2011, for giving him the impetus to retire from the University of Alabama and start writing professionally, and his wife for giving him the support, encouragement, and editorial assistance necessary to be successful at his chosen profession.

He Needed Killing Too

I read Bill Fitts "He Needs Killing." That book was well written with believable characters. Because of the quality of that mystery, I bought this book. Much to my delight this book was well written and had well developed characters. I would recommend this book to those who would like to read a good mystery that doesn't have graphic violence or explicit sex.

What a complex character!

On the outside, James Crawford works well with the pomp and circumstance of academia and university life. On the inside, he's cynical, wise cracking, and very much in the Robert Parker's Spenser mode. Love the jumping back and forth while on the trail of the murderer of someone who needed killing by a private detective that's also a tender-hearted pet lover. What a complex character!

A part of the great Western canon, sure, but Marlowe's play is surprisingly entertaining dark comedy

THE JEW OF MALTA is one of the handful of works by Christopher Marlowe, the Elizabethan playwright who dabbled in political intrigue and atheist proselytizing and died in a barfight before the age of 30. As the play opens, the Ottoman Empire is threatening the Christian island of Malta, whereupon the governor expropriates the holdings of a rich Jewish trade to buy the Turks off. Barabas, this Jew of Malta, doesn't take this too kindly and hatches various plans to destroy people close to the state and church.

Even though a great number of people meet gruesome ends in the play, THE JEW OF MALTA is not the Elizabethan tragedy you might imagine from a knowledge of Shakespeare's works. Instead, Marlowe has written a black comedy where murderous plots become so over the top you can't help but chuckle. When Barabas buys a slave to assist him in his dirty work, the Jew of Malta boasts of his earlier successes in bankrupting the poor, poisoning wells, and baiting thieves to stuff them and put them on display in his gallery. The slave, trying to one-up his master, proudly claims to have burned entire Christian villages and cut the throats of patrons of the inn he once owned. No audience could take this seriously, and I'm sure that performed on the stage the play brought laughter to many Elizabethan theatre-goers. Barabas' end, far from being a moving tragical death, is a type of pure slapstick you can find in cartoons to this day.

In most ways, Barabas is a stock character meant to appeal to the anti-Semitism of the time, being a miser who heaps up piles of gold in his counting house when he's not involved in one murder or another. What is interesting, however, is how Marlowe uses Barabas to condemn the faults of Christians. Early in the play he claims that many of the monks and nuns of Malta have taken vows only to hide their sporting with each other. The townspeople condemn Barabas as being evil by nature compared to the good Christians of Malta, but his murderous intrigue mainly consists of not killing people himself, but rather fanning the flames of their already present moral faults until the wipe each other out.

THE JEW OF MALTA has been highly influential on later English literature. Shakespeare may have been responding to Marlowe's choice of main character in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, and two of T.S. Eliot's poems take their epigraphs from Marlowe's play. I'd certainly recommend it for its importance in the canon, but beyond that for its entertainment value. Written in Elizabethan English, set in a very different time and place than what we know, it nonetheless succeeds as dark comedy to this day.

I purchased this book for a religious studies class I was taking. It is interesting to ready. A little hard to follow especially with the language. I had to read some passages more than a few times to understand what was going on. But the content was incorporated very well with the other reading material that was assigned with this book. Very interesting.
