J. KRISHNAMURTI Jiddu Krishnamurti (May 12, 1895–February 17, 1986) was a world renowned writer and speaker on philosophical and spiritual subjects. His subject matter included: the purpose of meditation, human relationships, the nature of the mind, and how to enact positive change in global society. Krishnamurti was born into a Telugu Brahmin family in what was then colonial India. In early adolescence, he had a chance encounter with prominent occultist and high-ranking theosophist C.W. Leadbeater in the grounds of the Theosophical Society headquarters at Adyar in Madras (now Chennai). He was subsequently raised under the tutelage of Annie Besant and C.W. Leadbeater, leaders of the Society at the time, who believed him to be a "vehicle" for an expected World Teacher. As a young man, he disavowed this idea and dissolved the world-wide organization (the Order of the Star) established to support it. He claimed allegiance to no nationality, caste, religion, or philosophy, and spent the rest of his life traveling the world as an individual speaker, speaking to large and small groups, as well as with interested individuals. He authored a number of books, among them The First and Last Freedom, The Only Revolution, and Krishnamurti's Notebook. :” In addition, a large collection of his talks and discussions have been published. At age 90, he addressed the United Nations on the subject of peace and awareness, and was awarded the 1984 UN Peace Medal. His last public talk was in Madras, India, in January 1986, a month before his death at home in Ojai, California. His supporters, working through several non-profit foundations, oversee a number of independent schools centered on his views on education – in India, England and the United States – and continue to transcribe and distribute many of his thousands of talks, group and individual discussions, and other writings, publishing them in a variety of formats including print, audio, video and digital formats as well as online, in many languages.

Divine Asymptote: A Radical Vision of the Grandest Unification Always a problem, particularly in the West, is that the vast majority have absolutely no context by which to begin to assimilate Krishnamurti's message. The Western mind has, for the most part, a fragmented perspective on reality, making K's meaning practically inscrutable to its ear. Without that context there is little chance that significant numbers will ever be exposed to his insights. Physics, and particularly David Bohm's fragmentation paradigm, provide a singular vehicle which can open the door for many. It creates a framework within which the scientifically minded can begin to fathom (perhaps for the first time) the implications of the unfragmented reality. www.divineasymptote.yolasite.com

Lot's of teasing but all for nothing...

Werewolf girl from a werewolf cult meets an outsider who challenges everything she believes in.

What drew me into this book is the way that one becomes a werewolf in this book's world. I have never read this take on the myth before. It's quite original and I'd encourage other authors to do similar things. Instead of the tired old thing where you have to get bitten by a werewolf and have no choice but to become one, I like this story's idea that you have to choose and commit to the thing.

The ceremony scene to become a wolf was quite amazing. You should read the sample book just for that scene, it's worth your time.

The rest of the book, on the other hand, may not be worth your time or your money. There are a lot of issues that you may have with this book.

My issues were with the fact that IT DOES NOT END. This book just stops. It builds and builds. It teases you like it's going somewhere then all of a sudden puts a "to be continued" at the end of it.

I understand that this is a series, but you should at least put some emotional closure at the end of it. Harry Potter is a series, but each book ends by resolving issues that it started with. Yes, it also left some questions unanswered in each volume, but at least it resolved enough story points to give it's audience some closure. Lord of the Rings does the same thing. Yet at the end of each book you feel like you have enough information about the characters and their situation to make a conclusion to the overarching story. But you continue to buy the succeeding books to find out what actually happened.

You don't get much of anything at the end of this book except the need to buy book 2. It's the only way to get closure.

The least the author could have done was put some previews at the end of the book so we get to see a bit into the future.

Better yet, the author should make the book free, then charge for the next book. That way you don't feel like you wasted money on an unfinished story.

1 star. It's a cheap gimmick ending to get you to buy more books in the series.

Seriously??!!

I'd like to say that this is the first time I've ever written (or even wanted to write) a review for a book. But I'm so mad that I just have to. I had a feeling when I was about halfway into the book that it was moving really slow and I should just stop reading it. But I kept on going cause I kinda knew where it was going and wanted to see if I was right. When I was about 80% into the book, I kept wondering why nothing was really happening. Then the book just ended. THAT'S IT. Ended right when it got to a climatic point. It was like the author decided to write one whole book, cut it in half, and made the first half this book. I'm so mad that I don't even want to get the 2nd book when it comes out. I felt like I just wasted a huge chunk of my time...

I understand that other people like it and whatever. But this is my personal opinion and I like my books with a beginning, middle, and end.

WOW, This book is AMAZING! The ending is a WHAT??!!?? lol, need book 2 NOW

Wow, what an amazing ride. On the edge of your seat, bite your finger nails amazing. Was up late into the night reading this, like 4 am! I could not put it down, especially after the halfway point.

I absolutely loved this book, the emotional connection you get really got to me, you can feel Jonathan's desperation like it was your own, in your bones, and made me cry. This story hooked me in and never let me go. Charlotte is truly a gifted writer, and I will be reading more of her work.

I was able to get into the book pretty quick; it didn't take me too long to figure it all out, like how River's world is so different from ours. I did get that cult type feel of it like Jonathan did, but not as much, as I know they are a tribe of shap-shifters, and need to keep that part of their life secret. I enjoyed learning how primitive they lived, but yet with some genius creations too, like Reuben's farm, the way he made the pipes (he is a blacksmith) run under the whole cabin and barn, to carry the thermal water from the hot springs, to warm the house and barn, and how it has been designed to be changed in the summer, to bring the mountain cold water instead to help keep the place cool. The log cabin is build into the side of the mountain, and sounds so pretty, like a lodge at the ski resorts.

This book takes place in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, which is where I grew up, so really enjoyed that part, as so much of the descriptions I could easily picture as I could relate. I think of them old mining towns nestled into the mountains.

I really loved River and Jonathan. River is a strong and courageous girl. I really could connect with her. She is a bit naive, but that is to be expected with the way she was raised. They are sort of like the Amish, they live like it was back in the old days, without technology. But not exactly like them, they are supernaturals, and it's the best way I can describe them. They are self sustaining, they grow, and raise their own food, hunt, etc. The place is called New Eden, and there is 2 parts to their community, the privileged better bloodlines part gets to live in more luxury, inside the mountain that is really nice, and even get some of the modern medicines etc. Then there are the surface dwellers (like River).

They live very long lives due to their shapshifter abilities. They call it merging with their spirit guide the wolf. River is an excellent archer with her bow and arrow, and can really take care of herself. We first see her in the Prologue at 13, then jump 5 years later around 18, and this is the time that she meets Jonathan.

I actually adore Jonathan. Not so much in the very beginning, as he was like any typical acting frat boy type, but that all changed when his twin brother gets killed. The emotions that you get during the time in Jonathan's POV and the loss will really get to you. I loved how we got to get inside several characters' heads. We get inside River, Jonathan, even Eli.

I loved the interactions with River's sort of brother (well, she was raised with him, so like a brother to her) Gabriel and Jonathan, Below is a cute scene with River, Eli, Gabriel and Jonathan, as they are taking him back to Rueben's (River's guardian) and they have to blindfold him, as outsiders are not allowed to see where their place is. He is considered a recruit, after they met up over an encounter with a cougar.

Jonathan's head throbbed harder when he sat up. "Can I take off this damn blindfold?"
"No!"
"Okay." He moved slowly to keep from freaking anyone out as he reached behind his head and felt the lump through the hood of his sheepskin parka. "What happened?"
"Someone threw a rock at you to keep you from removing the blindfold."
"Someone?"
"If you'd gotten the blindfold off, Eli would have killed you on the spot." River's voice was full of remorse, so Jonathan assumed she was the rock-thrower.
"Well then, I guess I owe someone a `thank you' for saving my life. Although a simple `don't do that' would have hurt less."
Gabriel said, "You're welcome."

That's just a start of the relationship Jonathan and Gabriel will have, like brothers.

I really can't say a whole lot more without spoiling it. I tried to give just a bit of it for you, to see how wonderful this book truly is. There are so many things that happen; it's full of emotion, some action, love and the forbidden as well.
Here is another sweet scene for you:

When he opened his eyes, River was right there, staring at him with glowing, purple eyes. This wasn't just a faint glimmer, like it was in the cave. This was a definite glow. Why wasn't it freaking him out? The longer he gazed into her strange, glorious eyes, the weaker his resistance became. Maybe she really was an angel.
"I care about you, too. Kiss me. Please."
Or a devil. Jonathan wove his fingers through River's hair as he cupped the back of her head. He knew kissing her was against the rules. Kissing her in her room, on her bed, with Reuben just down the hall was reckless, stupid and dangerous.
But he did it anyway.

I absolutely love Jonathan; he is such a deep down great guy, and perfect for River. I felt traumatized at a few points at what happens, and the ending just killed me it felt like. What a cliffhanger, but in a good way. I really can't wait to get book 2, which I do not know when it will be out. It's called River's Remorse.

I highly recommend this book. This book will satisfy people of many ages, though I think it's supposed to be 18+ but am not sure.

5 out of 5 big stars. A wonderful, suspenseful story!

Tragedy in five acts by William Shakespeare, performed in 1605-06 and published in a quarto edition in 1608. One of Shakespeare's finest tragedies, the work displays a pessimism and nihilism that make it a 20th-century favorite. The aging King Lear decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters, allotting each a portion in proportion to the eloquence of her declaration of love. The hypocritical Goneril and Regan make grand pronouncements and are rewarded; Cordelia, the youngest daughter, who truly loves Lear, refuses to make an insincere speech to prove her love and is disinherited. The two older sisters mock Lear and renege on their promise to support him. Cast out, the king slips into madness and wanders about accompanied by his faithful Fool. He is aided by the Earl of Kent, who, though banished from the kingdom for having supported Cordelia, has remained in Britain disguised as a peasant. Kent brings Lear to Cordelia, who cares for him and helps him regain his reason. The Earl of Gloucester likewise spurns his honest son, Edgar, and believes his conniving illegitimate son, Edmund. Edmund allies himself with Regan and Goneril to defend Britain against the French army mobilized by Cordelia. He turns his father over to Cornwall--who gouges out Gloucester's eyes--then imprisons Cordelia and Lear, but he is defeated in battle by Edgar. Jealous of Edmund's romantic attentions to Regan, Goneril poisons her and commits suicide. Cordelia is hanged. Great Ideas--But Beware!

I bought this edition as a teaching supplement, not realizing that it is the folio version of the play. The words "quarto" and "folio" refer to the size of the pages in the two editions. Many secondary schools and universities use the quarto edition and a lot is left out of the folio--this version cuts out three hundred lines and adds one hundred new ones. The effect is that it alters the way the characters are shown. If you are reading the play with a class and they have a quarto version, while you are using your trusty teacher's Cambridge, chances are there will be a lot of blank expressions and confusion on their faces. The lines they see will not jibe with yours. The extra articles and class activities are great though--just make sure that if you use the Cambridge, you have your students buy only folio editions.

FOLGER Shakespeare Library Edition of the Tragedy of King Lear BETTER THAN EXPECTED!

I have reviewed several current editions of King Lear and other Shakespearean plays, and was somewhat disappointed in the Folger edition of King Richard III. Nevertheless, the Folger Shakespeare Library edition of King Lear appears to be both accessible and scholarly, with solid reasoning behind its balance of the First Quarto with the First Folio versions of this intense and telling tragedy which we do well to revisit now.

My first love will always be Prof. Tucker Brook's redaction in the The Tragedy Of King Lear (The Yale Shakespeare) which against the academic preferences of the time chose the First Quarto over the First Folio. The reasons given by the Late Prof. are compelling, and brought about a generation of conflated editions which combined the two versions. The Quarto came first in publication, of course, and is longer; the Folio is later and does not contain several lines present in the Quarto (I believe about three hundred) yet introduces several (perhaps one hundred) of its own.

And so we have a generation of productions which sought to combine the two. For instance we have an early recording of Paul Scofield as the King using a conflated edition and a later recording from his eighties in which only the Folio is used: King Lear (Naxos AudioBooks), following as it states the The Tragedy of King Lear (The New Cambridge Shakespeare), a strictly First Folio presentation. The greatest available recording is of course the Branagh - Gielgud production King Lear (BBC Radio Presents) which must be purchased and repeatedly heard, as it is real. Be certain to get the accompanying brochure.

Be that as it may, with this brief description of the history of this tortured text, let me state this present edition from Folger presents solid reasons for its always arbitrary choices. While stating their preference for the First Folio edition, they actually publish here a conflated version, with variant readings in a variety of brackets and poiinted parentheses, with explanations. They have produced therefore something here of great value, yet at a small price and therefore accessible to any classroom, production company or reader.

As usual the Folger diverges from the usual Critical Edition format of a third of a page of text, a strip of variorum and a third of a page of notes to the text above. Folger correctly fids more readable a diptych approach. In opening the book to the play, the reader discovers on the right hand page the text and on the left hand page notes. Further specific notes are discovered in the back.

In short (if it is not too late to write that) this book may approach any other critical edition, and passes many (let us not mention the unfortunate Joe Pearce's attempt). It presents a thorough examination of Shakespeare's life and theatre, suggestions on reading "his" language, and on reading Lear, this great tragedy for our times. A critical essay by Susan Snyder is included in the back, as well as suggestions for further readings. I find this edition in brief very useful for any new scholar of Lear, and I only wish I could now afford the new King Lear: New Critical Essays (Shakespeare Criticism), or even Critical Essays on Shakespeare's King Lear (Critical Essays on British Literature), and the rest.

Conflation fights back

Although RA Foakes' Arden3 edition appeared some years after those of Wells & Taylor (Complete Oxford) and Jay L Halio (Cambridge) it did not follow their precedent of issuing separate texts based on Quarto and Folio originals. These early texts (Q 1608 and F 1623 respectively) occasionally offer quite different versions of the play and reconciling them to form a single, coherent whole is a task that is, arguably, less elegant than the dual edition solution. By comparison, Arden's text looks cumbersome, with numerous Q and F superscripts surrounding passages found exclusively in one or other source.

Foakes is well aware that his single, 'conflated' text isn't as fashionable as those of the 'revisionists' mentioned above, who believe that the Folio text of Lear represents Shakespeare's revised and final draft, and that modern editors should not pick and mix between Q and F but respect the integrity of the two early sources. While seemingly reactionary, Foakes is in fact countering the new orthodoxy of Halio et al. In his view, their 'dogmatic and purist stance ... abandons the idea of King Lear as a single work of which we have two versions.' He is cautious and level-headed in his approach, aware of the limitations of scholarly speculation and in presenting both Q and F variants he allows the reader to make up her/his own mind.

Aside from this central controversy, Arden3 Lear has much to offer. Foakes reminds us of some key differences between the Jacobean world and our own: the original audience, he says, would have tuned in much more readily than us to puns and linguistic innovation; grasped the symbolic difference between crown and coronet; fully understood the distinctions of 'thou' and 'thee'; and recognised the constitutional impossibility of a monarch giving away his kingdom as though it were in his personal gift. The Introduction also presents illuminating discussions on loyalty and disobedience (in which Oswald could conceivably be seen as an ideal servant and Kent a bad one), on the problem of illusion in Gloucester's attempted suicide (IV.6) and on the influence of writers such as Harsnett, Erasmus and Montaine. Plentiful examples of dramatic practice from the play's long stage history are skilfully integrated into these discussions, while its equally rich critical history - especially that of the C20 - is helpfully evaluated. The conclusion is that there can be no return to Christian redemptionist optimism on the one hand or to totally nihilistic interpretations on the other. A recognition of the play's complexity, paradoxes and contradictions have led many to feel, in the words of Richard Fly, 'a deep distrust of all attempts at closure' in King Lear.

Ultimately, therefore, this Arden3 is not as radical as rival editions. But it presents an honest, balanced and democratic version of the play in which judgements are occasionally forcefully expressed and occasionally left unresolved. It is comprehensive, authoritative and thought-provoking and should be of value to any serious student.

This was pretty good. I really enjoyed the read. It follows two stories, a lady at home in her town, and also her husband who is away on business when the power goes out. Their two stories, of him trying to get home and her trying to survive are interesting and original. Neither are survivalists and both are pretty normal people.

The only thing that caught me in this book was the time line. Or more specifically, how long things took. Some things I felt should have been accomplished much quicker or have taken much longer. But it did not draw me out of the story.

A poignant illustration of what our lives would be without technology

The Blackout is a poignant illustration of what our lives would be without technology, shown through the lives of ordinary people.

While the strong bond between the main characters, husband and wife Gary and Molly, drives the plot, some of the most moving moments come from the supporting cast. I loved Molly's interaction with the children in her class, for example. Their adaptability and insight gave hope to the daunting circumstances. Jimmy Jean was another of my favorite characters. He acted as a support and a sort of father-figure to Molly, and I realized by the end of the book that I had come to depend on him in much the same way.

Gary's journey through the U.S. on his way back to his wife gives other examples of how humanity might deal with such an extreme situation. In his travels, Gary encounters savagery, military reactionism, and, in a few bright places, unexpected kindness. Molly's community shows the same diversity in microcosm, although they find a balance surprisingly well. I can only hope that my community would show the same spirit in similar circumstances!

Overall I found this a surprisingly hopeful and inspiring example of the "post-apocalyptic" genre. If you're looking for bleak, you won't find it here, but you will find a strong testimony to both the best and worst parts of human nature.

New Author off to a Great Start

I enjoyed reading this first novel by Stephanie Erickson. (I'm glad I got the chance to read it before other reviewers gave so much away!) Unlike other "doomsday" books in SciFi tradition, this story is believable with characters who act like real people. I look forward to the next book by this new author.
