Short, but to the point and entertaining.

SPOILER ALERT: The title gives away most of what the book is about. It's written from the viewpoint of someone who has been there, done that, in the world of commercial trucking. It's interesting to see how truckers see the road and you in your tiny, gnatlike car. With over 8 years of experience, I trust the author knows what he's talking about.

Minus one star for the cover, which needs help, and the use of a "lol" in the document. It is a document, not a full book, at only a few dozen pages, but it gets the point across, and it's only $.99 cents.

Would make a really good gift for a first time driver.

The analysis of German pronunciation is very comprehensive (and the simple phonetic system used in the early stages is readable by sight). The practice exercises are carefully designed to allow the student to use what he learned. The closing sections contain a summary of grammar, a guide to letter writing (with sample German letters), and a valuable study guide to German literature by Dr. Richard Friedenthal.
The book differs from others of its type in that it gives more attention to the elementary stages of learning, and the rate of progress is less rapid than usual. This means that any intelligent person, even if he is an absolute beginner, can with sufficient application arrive at the end of the course confident of having acquired a solid foundation for further study.

This book is not helpful. It is not broken down in a good way for learning. For example, it does not teach you how to conjugate "to be" until page 42.

Moreover, it is so antiquated that it teaches you words that Germans don't use, e.g Knabe = boy, and Federn= pen! When I showed it to native Germans, they laughed and wondered if the book was hoping to teach Americans how to write old-sounding poetry.

Additionally, a good amount of the lessons focus on learning the words for cigarettes (including how to ask for an "American cigarette") and conjugating "to smoke."

My poor grey matter is working hard enough to learn relevant German words, I don't need this out-of-date book giving me worthless words and phrases.

Rather than repeat the accolades of others, I would mostly say "thank you" to the other reviewers for their accurate comments. This little volume has a lot of helpful grammar hints and tables. For me, it is like a course book which I am working through a chapter at a time.

I am using it to supplement Learn in Your Car German, which assists in developing aural and pronunciation skills. Between the two I am finding that my German vocabulary and reading skills are growing rapidly -- it is hard to imagine ever speaking German fluently, but then I felt that way studying Spanish and French at the outset.

It is now another month since my initial review and I keep finding more to like about this learning aid.

The 15-page Grammar Summary near the end of the book has a marvelous compilation of how articles (der, die and das, plus so-called "ein" and "der" words, change in each declension. Seeing the striking similarities in the endings for the various words in each case has made what looked to me like an incomprehensible mess pretty comprehensible.

Using this book helped me with making sense of signs and the written word while traveling in Switzerland in 2009. I put it aside for 18 months and now have another trip to Switzerland coming up so started over. Although I forgot a lot of vocabulary, the second time around the book is even better, probably because the first time around the declension of nouns and the split verbs were a complete mystery. This time, it all makes much more intuitive sense for some reason and the utility of the vocabulary taught in the book is much more evident to me this go around as well. When my Swiss grandsons understood my simple and probably grammatically incorrect sentence -- "Hast du essen gern salat?" "Do you like salad?" They and I were both surprised and pleased.

Excellent comprehensive German grammar book

This is a very high quality foreign language textbook. "They don't make them like used to" and this is how they used to make them: high quality, excellent text, nearly devoid of typographical errors, numerous highly detailed hand-drawn sketches, easy to learn from if one is willing to do the work on a regular basis. The original text was written in 1948, so some of the vocabulary is a little out of date, but that is a very minor point, since a foreign language book is primarily about grammar. Current German vocabulary can be obtained from other sources after one has learned to speak the language. I have now worked a little more than halfway through the book and I am not the least bit disappointed.

My chapter of the sorority Beta Sigma Phi, Xi Zeta Gamma in Kincardine, Ontario, has put up Mitten Trees in the lead up to Christmas for decades. The items placed on the tree are gathered by the people at Community Services and included in the Christmas Hampers that go out to needy families every year.
Each year some of the most beautiful hand made items are put onto the trees' branches and many knitters in the area knit all year for the trees.

About the Author
Kelly Young was born in 1962 and has lived all over the great province of Ontario.
A graduate of the English literature program at the University of Waterloo, she moved to a small town on the shores of Lake Huron in southwestern Ontario with her husband, and together they raised two sons and a multitude of cats.
Kelly worked as a freelance reporter for many years, switching to full time reporting for the local paper briefly before taking herself to a much quieter bookstore.
She currently rules over an empty nest with her husband and three cats.

A Treasure!

This is a wonderful story about leading a child to want to help others. It also demonstrates the huge generosity of knitters and crocheters. It gives a girl a reason to want to learn to knit.

Although not a picture book, the pictures that are included display nicely on my monochrome Kindle.

Wonderful genre crossover! You'll not want to put it down.

I love genre crossovers, and this is great one. It's Beverly Lewis meets Veronica Roth, with a bit of Stephen King's Firestarter thrown in for good measure. While I'm not a huge fan of first person point of view, this one was done so well that I really didn't notice it. Once the action starts, you can NOT put this book down. I finished the book in a matter of hours and will probably get the sequels. One nice thing is that you can stop with book 1 if you want to (just don't read the teaser prologue for the next book, and you can believe the characters are going to live happily ever after). I really dislike books that end with cliffhangers just to make you have to buy the next book to find out what happens, but this book has an ending and a good one. Grounded is well-written, well edited, and a great addition to the Indie market. I wish all Indie books were this well produced.

Warning: those who lean very left politically and who believe in the honesty and necessity of the current environmental movement will probably be insulted by this book,since the environmental politics of our current era is the bad guy in this dystopia. I happen to agree with the political sentiment expressed in the book, so I enjoyed it, but others may not so much. This book also expresses strong faith, but is not necessarily "Christian."

fun and fast paced

I will start with the good. This was a fun and fast paced, dystopian, young adult novel. The characters were likeable and well-written. There wasn't a slow moment in the story, which is great.

Lydia and Jeremiah are two Amish, 17 year old kids. When Lydia's father has a stroke and is sneaked into Crater City under an assumed name, Lydia and Jeremiah receive permission to go on Rumspringa, so Lydia can be with her dad.

Dystopian World: It was a world filled with consumers and pollution. A nuclear accident caused everyone to support the Green Republic, the rulers. All energy usage is carefully monitored and regulated, but it is widely known that the Green Republic shows favoritism for certain people. This is also when it was decided that the Amish would be walled into a preserve. The Amish eat meat, wear leather, and aren't vaccinated, a major sin under the new regime. (But the Amish built an opening into the wall.)

Plot: While the Amish plot element is unique, the rest of this read like Firestarter by Stephen King. In King's book a group of college student's volunteer to take part in drug trials (in this book they were military soldiers), which cause them to have paranormal powers (in this book the power is electrical). Two in the drug trials get married and have a daughter with even more powers (in this book two couples have a boy and a girl). The government wants the daughter for experimentation (the government wants Lydia for experimentation). The daughter, Charlie, is captured and is convinced by a plant, John, to really show them what she can do (A gov't plant, David, convinces Lydia to really show them what she can do.) Charlie is taken to a sealed room with the government scientists safely behind glass divider (same for Lydia). Charlie burns so hot she burns the crap out of everything and even effects the scientist behind the glass wall (same for Lydia, but she even bursts the glass and taunts the scientists). There are even similar endings...ugh.

Love: Another case of insta-love occurs between Lydia and Corwin. Yes, there is a love triangle. I hate insta-love and love triangles.

Characters: I did like them, but the whole love thing ruined it for me.

Overall: It was still a fun and fast paced read, but I liked Firestarter more than Grounded.

Electrifying!!!

I never know what to think when I start reading a book by a new author.
But this one was electrifying!!!
It starts off as an innocent girl from an Amish village who goes out into the real world to see how life is for others. With it being the year 2050, things are very different from what you would normally expect.
The things that happen catch you off guard. And then keep your attention with trying to figure out what is or even could happen next. This book had me on the edge of my seat all the way to the last page.
Would recommend this book to everyone!!
