WOW, strap yourself in, twists and turns ahead!

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the Dane Maddock books but this one takes the cake. I thought I was going to be reading about Dane and Bones on a pirate treasure hunt but I was mistaken. It started off as a pirate treasure hunt but it takes so many twists and turns that by the time you are finished you (well I did) find yourself saying what the heck just happened? I wasn't expecting that! I don't like to give anything away about the story because I don't want to take anything away from other's reading experience. All I will say is that this book is a blast! It was so much fun to read that I cannot wait for the next adventure of Dane, Bones and their cohorts!

I hope that you enjoy this book as much as I did.

The Best Dane Maddock Adventure to-date!

This is a great must read, my favourite Dane & Bones to-date. Really surprising & unexpected twists along the way. I cannot write a Book review to do this read justice but i can tell you i highly recommend you read this for yourself because once you start you will not be able to put this read down! Its one of those Books you just dont want it to end!

Thrilling, Exciting and Marvelous

This is my favorite David Wood book so far. Buccaneer follows a path through the years from pirates to the Holy Grail. Dane Maddock and Bonebrake traverse a dangerous path in search of a pirate treasure resulting from clues left from Dane's late father in a book. It's a great take on the lore of King Arthur and the myths surrounding his weapons. This truly is a must read for all of us who crave the thrill of historical adventure.

Characters with odd priorities

I bought this book on the recommendation of one of my favorite authors, with the expectation that the book would be fun and romantic, yet with some depth. Unfortunately this was not to be the case. The heroine made nonsensical choices time after time throughout the entire book. I was expecting something lighthearted, but the plot was almost nonexistent. The book was a series of mishap after mishap, with cardboard cutout characters. Most of the characters - even the heroine's sister who was so central to the "plot" - was one-dimensional. I hate to be this negative about a book, but I was just so disappointed. The last few chapters in particular were distressing. SPOILER When the heroine is saved from the villain, she tells the hero that although she has injuries and burns over 60% of her body, she's fine because she wasn't raped. Really? Fine? That's bad enough, but she was actually sexually assaulted - the villain just didn't rape her. So I found the tone and message throughout the whole book "woman who needs to be rescued, but she's okay as long as she isn't raped, even though she was horribly injured and tortured" to be in poor judgment. SPOILER END This problem is on top of the lack of plot or character choices.

Calgon, Take Me Away!

I thought this book would be a fun, funny PNR. It wasn't. I stopped just past halfway and I'm not going back.

It started out okay and quickly descended into a hot mess. Meet our heroine, Bathsheba or Bath for short. And right there it all started to go downhill. Bath? Really? I expected the hero to be named Calgon because he definitely took her away.

Bath has a sister who is a werewolf and hiding in plain sight. Too plain of sight for my brain to accept. They both work in the office of a paranormal dating service.

The characters were rather dumb, Bath makes the wrong choice probably 98% of the time. The hero, not Calgon but Beau, is an alpha werecougar. Beau calls the dating service in need of an accommodating shifter for a night or two of hot sex when a female in his pack goes into heat.

But when he hears Bath's voice he decides she'll do just fine. Ah, romance. Um, did I mention that dating between humans and shifters is sort of forbidden? Unless you're a virgin like Bath then you're the one human all the shifters want. Sigh.

The plot, I guess there's a plot- sort of, is weak .

and, well, I'm not sure just what it is. I have a feeling that the big scary things that growl in the night are just an excuse by the author to have Beau swoop in, drug Bath, and whisk her away to his private house in the wilds for sex, sex, sex. But I never got to the sex, sex, sex because I lost interest.

Bath was just too dumb and Beau needed a silver bullet between the eyes.

As a human, Bathsheba normally wouldn't have much to do with supernatural beings. However, since she works for Midnight Liaisons, an exclusive paranormal dating service, Bathsheba is up to her ears in vamps, weres, harpies and more on a daily basis. When a date with a very important client is canceled at the last minute, Bathsheba is frantic. Beau Russell may be new to Midnight Liaisons, but the were-cougar happens to be head of the Paranormal Alliance. Luckily for Bathsheba, Beau has a solution; Bathsheba will be his date...for a week. When he's about to go into "heat," so to speak. It's almost too much for one human to handle, and that's before Bathsheba takes into account the fact that humans and supes aren't supposed to date AND before she begins to feel like someone's stalking her. But since the hunky were-cougar is determined to have her...well, Bathsheba can't bring herself to resist.

BEAUTY DATES THE BEAST is a quirky paranormal romp that begins what is sure to be a fun series filled with supernatural delights. Author Jessica Sims has written a fast-paced story that's got both humor and heat. Beau is a meltingly sexy hero, but his true appeal lies in the fact that he takes his responsibility as the leader of his clan and the Paranormal Alliance seriously. I can't help it; I love a hero who has a good head on his shoulders. Bathsheba, in turn, is someone who is willing to sacrifice much for those she loves. She doesn't cry or complain about her sometimes less-than-ideal life, but she isn't some saintly, unrealistic heroine who doesn't acknowledge that she'd like luck to turn her way once in a while. Together, Beau and Bathsheba are a great couple, and Ms. Sims made it easy to enjoy their romantic journey.

A dash of danger, paranormal politics and some seriously nasty villains round out BEAUTY DATES THE BEAST. The individual characters and the variety of species Ms. Sims introduces in BEAUTY DATES THE BEAST made me want to learn more about that world. I finished BEAUTY DATES THE BEAST a satisfied reader, but I can't wait for the next MIDNIGHT LIAISONS book!

On his decision to make the letters public, Barnard commented, "After reading them one could not doubt his [van Gogh's] sincerity, his character, nor his originality; there, pulsating with life, one would find the whole of him." Indeed, these 23 letters, eloquently translated into English, radiate with their author's impulsiveness, intensity, and mysticism. In one van Gogh admits: "I can't disguise from you the fact that I like the country, having been brought up there — floods of memories of the past, aspirations towards that infinity, of which the sower and the sheaves are symbols, enchant me now as then. But I wonder when I'll get my starry sky done, a picture which haunts me always."
Complemented by handsome black-and-white reproductions of some of van Gogh's major paintings and facsimiles from his letters, this volume is essential reading for scholars and students of art and will be treasured by artists and art lovers alike.

Although his works fetch record-breaking prices at modern auctions, Vincent van Gogh (1853–90) sold only a single painting in his lifetime. Everything I know about economics is wrong

Keen points out many logical flaws in the conclusions and methods of modern economics at a level which can be understood by most any reader. A couple of first year economics courses helped my understanding of the topics, but weren't necessary by any stretch. Even though I did very well in these courses there was something about them that just didn't sit right, Keen shines a floodlight on what those items are and why they don't make sense.

Best economics book I've ever read

Having worked with my partner on an economics PhD I have read a lot of Economics books to get me up to speed, all but this one left me thinking ' you have got to be kidding' they were so far divorced from reality. Realistic, readable, well referenced. A must read for anyone that is eligible to vote.

A real karate student

I am currently studying for my black belt in shotokan. As someone who has been in and out of karate for the last 15 years, I have always known I am a good puncher and a good kicker, but I have always felt I was unprepared by karate as it is currently taught, to go to the ground. I personally was a wrestler so I have some firsthand experience but many of my peers have had no real ground or grappling training whatsoever. This book has helped to answer the persistant question I have asked myself for years "Why is there no grappling in Karate?" The answer is that it is here and it always has been here. This book (and others) are helping to open my awareness to a new understanding of karate. This is not the karate that has been taught in America the last 5 decades, it is the karate of a person who literally may have to call upon it to defend their own life. I am looking at all of my kata with a new spirit of discovery, looking for secrets that have been hidden in plain sight for years. I also very highly recommend Shotokans Secret by Bruce Clayton. These two books have helped to start me on a path to discover and determine what I believe karate should be. It is not the point-sparring sport that is popular in America. It is a serious, spiritual and potentially deadly state of being that one hopes they never have need to call upon. Myself, my fellow students, and even my sensai, are opening ourselves up to this realisation and our club is beginning to evolve. Oddly, we are moving ahead by reaching backwards and this book is a good place to start.

An insightful look at karate's forgotten aspect

This is an outstanding tome which illuminates grappling, an all too often forgotten aspect of karate. These methods are frequently not practiced in many dojos simply because practitioners do not realize that they even exist within their system. On the street, however, karateka may face grapplers, boxers, and practitioners of a whole plethora of styles. The good news is that we have all the tools necessary to survive or triumph in any violent encounter, be it standing up or on the ground.

In an art which has become overly focused on striking and kicking by many practitioners, this outstanding text will help you to practice the way it was meant to be--as an effective, holistic, and complete fighting system. It is well illustrated, easy to understand, practical, and very insightful. The author not only describes how grappling methods were recorded in karate kata and demonstrates a wide assortment of techniques, but he also describes the principles that make them effective in real-life fighting situations.

Subjects covered include understanding the role of grappling in self-defense, kata and bunkai (applications), close range strikes, throws and takedowns, ground fighting, chokes and strangles, arm bars, leg and ankle locks, neck twists, finger locks, wrist locks, and combinations. Dirty fighting and grappling drills are also covered. As you can see this is an outstanding and holistic treatise on the subject.

Iain Abernethy really knows his stuff. He holds a godan (5th degree black belt) in applied karate from the British Combat Association, one of the world's leading groups for close-quarter combat and practical martial arts. He is also a yodan (4th degree black belt) in Wado-Ryu karate (English Karate Governing Body), a member of the Combat Hall of Fame, and a former national level kata judge in the UK. He is the author of four books on applied karate: Bunkai-Jutsu: The Practical Application of Karate Kata, Throws for Strikers: The Forgotten Throws of Karate, Boxing, and Taekwondo, Karate's Grappling Methods, and Arm-Locks for All Styles. Sensei Abernethy has produced numerous DVD's and videos on applied karate and kata bunkai and is a regular contributor to all of UK's leading martial arts magazines.

Yes, buy it; you can't live without it

Iain Abernethy is the real deal. And I continue to wonder where and how he got so smart. And I'm not talking about all his credentials, including an advanced black belt and so on. Those are surprisingly common these days. But Iain brings rare insight to his study of karate.

A lot of folks have studied karate for a long time, and gotten very good indeed in the kickee-punchee aspect of the discipline.

But most dojos have taught the kata, discussed a few improbable applications, prepared the student to dance through the kata for an examination, and failed utterly to explore the actual use of the kata in self defense.

And that's the case even though Gichen Funakoshi taught that kata was the core of karate training, and Choki Motobu pointed out that all you needed to know about fighting was contained in Tekki Shodan kata.

Then along comes Iain Abernethy and discusses exactly what those wierd movements in the kata are used for in the world of no-kidding fighting. And he is generous in the extreme. Many writers who know something in this area pace themselves. Iain shovels information-no teaspoon for him!

While all of his books and dvds are remarkably useful, this one is particularly well suited to a karate student who has gotten through his first bundle of kata and who has started to wonder why he's wasting time with kata instead of spending more time on the makiwara.

This isn't a deep exam of one kata and it's applications. It examines multiple kata and provides a many different examples of ways to apply the unusual movements that karate students get to practice again and again.

By the way, when you see real and effective applications of kata movements, your first response is likely to be "Eureka!! I knew there was a pony in this pile somewhere!"

As an overview, this book discusses the history of kata in karate, basic techniques drawn from kata, and the sorts of criteria you should consider when evaluating a possible kata application.

This book emphasizes the grappling techniques embedded in kata, because those are the techniques most likely be slighted in most dojos (that's not evil, just factual). And discovering joint locks, chokes and throws that are hiding in plain sight inside karate kata.

But buy the book, and you'll be hooked, and you'll run out and buy everything Iain has written and committed to dvds (you'll need to check out Amazon.co.uk to find his dvds. I don't know why they aren't available on Amazon here in the U.S., but any amount of inconvenience to get your hands on them is well spent).
