At its heart, Rosy is a tense tale of how one easy decision can set us down a path that is hard to reverse. Rosy is easy to like and I quickly became invested in seeing her meet and overcome the challenges she faced. It's a great coming-of-age story with widespread appeal.

However, for this child of the seventies, the setting made this story even more enjoyable. Tyrpak captured the attitude and climate of the decade perfectly. A nice little touch were the chapter headings, each a song title or a snippet of lyric that summarized the chapter while evoking some musical nostalgia. As a music geek, a link to the song on Amazon made me happy, as I was able to quickly answer the question "who sung that" when I was stumped. Those who read the book on a suitable device should even be able to stop for a short short musical interlude between chapters while listening to a sample of each song.

Another fab novel from Tyrpak!

As a fan of author Suzanne Tyrpak's other novels (both which are more historical in nature) I was pleased to discover that she writes just as well no matter the time period or sub-genre of the book.

Not every author can pull of a novel with some of the things that this one contains (violence, betrayal, sadism) without it being bleak and depressing. Tyrpak's that talented- even after reaching the novels conclusion I felt light and sated the way one does after feasting on a worthy tome.

Dreams can be just Nightmares with Happy Endings

Part love story, party thriller, part time capsule of New York in the 70s, Rosy is essentially the struggle of a young woman coming into adulthood and finding who she wants to be and with whom she wants to share her life.

The love story could be summed up by the country western tune "Looking for Love in all the Wrong Places." It was clear to me as the reader that her love interest, Robin, is bad news from the start but as a a woman, I could she why Rosy keeps coming back for more. Robin is verbally supportive and seems loving. He's charming and handsome. And the sex is great! But it's all a facade. Like many attracted to the bright lights of the city Robin is a manipulative loser. Rosy comes to realize by the end of the novel what sort of price she is paying for this relationship.

Rosy, a struggling actress, in order to remain financially independent for her dominating father, is slowly sucked into the ansty underbelly of New York City's "nightclub" dancing. Her experiences bring her in contact with dangerous men who may or may not have her best interest at heart.

New York City is depicted with all its gritty glamour of the 70s. I swear reading the book I could smell the BO/urine/fear odor of the subways of that time and feel the struggle just walking down the street during rush hour - that glorious indifference the city shows it's inhabitants. An indifference that feels like freedom until it doesn't.

And Rosy, I just wanted to take her home, give her a hug, a hot bath and a good meal then forbid her to every leave the house again! She is so well drawn I found myself looking for Rosy when I was in the CIty last week. THe reader wants this character to figure things out, save herself, but with each incident she seems to be digging a bigger and bigger hole for herself.

The "supporting" characters are also well drawn. There's Joe, her manager, who yearns for the wife he's lost and sees in Rosy. There's the dangerous mob guy. The reader half wants Rosy to hook up with him because he's powerful and wealthy and could solve a lot of her problems. Rosy instinctly knows to keep distance between them. But the mob guy is used to getting what he wants and sometimes in the most brutal manner possible.

I have read a couple of other novels by this author and this is by far my favorite. I will remember Rosy a long time....

Well written

This is the best short story I've read all year. Considering the format and its limits, the characters came alive and the plot was engaging. I will definitely watch for more stories by these two authors.

So sweet with just enough tartness!

This story is from the new Lunch Hour Love Stories website launched by Hawkins and several other well-known romance writers. They're new romantic short stories that you can finish in your lunch hour - a great idea, especially at just $1.99 each. In this story, Hawkins and her writing partner, Holly Crawford, create two distinct, very likeable characters with quirks and passions, then set them at odds. Sir Richard is a self-contained physician, while Jane Doherty, Baroness Kilkenny, is a passionate healer forced to learn her healing arts in secret. They clash over the care of Jane's husband, Baron Kilkenny, then months after the young Baron's death, they lock horns over the care of another patient. It is a treat to follow them through the changes that result in a sweet passion and deep trust. I highly recommend this story - especially if it's lunch time and the boss is making you nuts!

About the Author
John Keats was born in 1795, the son of a livery-stable keeper. An orphan by the age of fourteen, he was apprenticed to a surgeon for a time, but gave up medicine for poetry. His luxuriant early work was famously savaged by the critics, but he remained assured in his conviction that he would eventually "be among the English poets," and his volume of 1820 was more favorably viewed. Keats's longed-for marriage to Fanny Brawne was prevented by the onset of the tuberculosis that killed him, at the age of twenty-six, in 1821.

Good Introduction to the Shorter Poetry of Keats

The poetry of John Keats is a remarkable discovery for the reader unfamiliar with his works. His poetry is timeless. I have read this small Dover edition innumerable times and with each reading I gain further pleasure from his works. I find it almost inconceivable that Keats only lived 25 years. His early death, due in part to an extended hiking tour, is almost without parallel. It is as though Shakespeare had died after producing only a few plays.
The Dover edition, priced only at a dollar, represents much of Keats' better known, shorter poems. They are arranged chronologically (the best are not at the beginning) and illustrate his growth as a poet. If you are new to Keats, I suggest that you skip around, maybe focusing on the shorter poems in the beginning. But don't wait too long to delve into the longer The Eve of St. Agnes. And sample the Odes of Keats, possibly his best lyric poetry.
I found it helpful to make a few notes in the margin for unfamiliar words and expressions, particularly archaic terms. My notes assisted me considerably in second and third readings.
I knew of John Keats, but had not read his poetry. But some time ago I happened to read Perinne's Sound and Sense, an excellent guide to reading poetry, and developed some interest in Keats. You might find this text a useful reference.
I also recommend an audio tape (ISBN 0-8045-0868-2), Treasury of John Keats, read by Robert Spaeight and Robert Edison. The readings are quite exceptional. I especially enjoyed The Eve of St. Agnes.

Beauty is Truth

Keats is after Shakespeare perhaps the most musically rich of all the English poets. He sees and feels and hears the world in lines of incredible beauty. "Truth is Beauty, Beauty Truth, That is all ye know on earth and all ye need to know." are the lines of Keats which best describe his own work.

This edition contains what are arguably Keats greatest work, the Odes. Their richness may not always be easily understood, but the feeling which runs through them is of art at its most abundantly wondrous.

THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!

Enid’s Famous Five books featuring Julian, Dick, George and Anne and Timmy the dog, were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago. Thank you, Enid. The BBC, many public libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having quite a lot of difficulty obtaining the original books as so many places would not stock them. The stories are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.

When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the letter on the back cover from Enid in some of the editions, and also the physical appearance of the book which I treasured as a youngster with the way the books were produced then which made them somehow much easier to read.

It’s a delight to read the stories again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old).

Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my own reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.
